I saw this today at Richmond which was almost full with lots of school parties too. I thought it was great! The puppeteers were brilliant and the puppets were beautifully made, very much in the Warhorse style. Now we were scattered through the stalls so I only saw two others at the end and they only thought it was OK. But it got a terrific reception from the audience. Obviously the story, very much about Stalin at the time, has added resonance now. The cart horse, Boxer, was fantastically portrayed from a bruising great steed in the first battle, being gradually reduced as he is worked half to death.
My one quibble would be that sometimes the words were a bit hard to make out, but I could still follow the story. My neighbour in the stalls found the music deafening but I think she has tinnitus! Ninety minutes whizzed by and I thought it was utterly gripping.
