Got this from the library today (first person to read it, yay!) and I'm finding it surprisingly dull. The small details are very well done but he's pretty useless at writing tension. Which is a big fault in a crime novel. But it is his first so he may improve. Even Pratchett admitted that the first two novels of the Discworld were pretty ropey.

I agree I’m sorry to say…. halfway through but it’s been a bit of a chore, I’m finding his style a bit clunky and the basic story a bit tedious It will sell well because of who he is, and the next one hopefully will be an improvement, but I hope his sermons were more gripping!

Yeah, I shall try the next one and decide then whether to read any more. Maybe he'd be better at a different genre. I'm enjoying all the details of a vicar's day to day life but the rest is a bit laborious

I've now finished it and I have to say it ends better than it started. There's a moment, halfway through, when he seems to find his style and his voice. So I'm more hopeful about the second one.

Half way through, hope you are right about it picking up then, Miranda! Not totally impressed so far.

It doesn't turn into a great story but it is better. I thought so anyway.

It’s number 1 in the book charts! I hesitated about getting it but might pick it up second hand idc as you don’t all trash it!

I finished this last night and thought it was quite good, but a bit of a Curate’s Egg, 😂. I liked his style of writing but found the characterisation a bit off. I liked the portrayal of Daniel, his family, the detective and the aristocratic family, but I found the villagers completely indistinguishable and couldn’t remember who any of them were from one chapter to another. The denouement was interesting, but it popped out of nowhere really. It also seemed odd that it was set in 1988 without any indication of that in the opening chapters. I was getting confused as to how what I thought was set in the present day could keep referencing the war. Eventually he mentioned Celine Dion winning Eurovision so I googled that, 😂.
Ill try the next one but hope he pays as much attention to the portrayal of the villagers as he does to the leads.

I can't really remember much about it but agree it was definitely a curate's egg.

Thanks for this, I checked on my iPad and I can also get Murder at Evensong on the iPad for 99p! So I bought it, I mean for 99p I don’t care if it’s slow.

I'm now reading the second one and have to say, it's not an improvement. In fact it's worse than the first one. And I may have to pay the library for it as Charlie has chewed the spine.
