Just noticed this.
The team take a bunch of metal detectorists to a place with known historical interest and set them off to see what they can find.
They're finding a lot so far - more than I thought they would

Sounds interesting! Is there loads of ads?

There are ads, and it is a bit PBS in format. But they found a lot of interesting things and there were segues into underwater detecting and people who will search for your lost items. A fair bit of clapping from the other detectorists when someone found something. But one guy explained that finding something is one thing, finding something interesting is another.
Ramsha Dave was the expert and they had a Finds Officer on plus him who used to do BBC Breakfast and Michaela Strachan in her shorts again.
I may have missed it but I don't think they gave exact location details, just a historical area, one hour south of Hadrians Wall and 90 minutes from the coast. It was Yorkshire, so I'd think near Thirsk or Ripon maybe. Near Catterick probably because that's been a military base for eons.

I'm afraid I only lasted 10 mins. Hate this kind of presentation of archeology. And the detectorist who has been doing it for 20 years and just happens to find gold when he's on the TV? Yeah right.

Well I did think they found a remarkable number of things and I must admit to thinking 'plant' more than once.
Being from the North east I struggled to think where somewhere an hour south of Hadrians Wall could manage to be in Yorkshire and 90 minutes from the sea. That means going through Northumberland, Tyne and Wear and County Durham.
In normal driving an hour from the wall would only get you to Darlington at best, and I do mean best, if you started at the coast at Wallsend and went diagonally inland for an hour and that's not 90 minutes from the coast.
If you went diagonally from Carlisle you wouldn't get to Yorkshire in an hour because you'd have to cross the pennines!
So God knows where they really were. Just some random field. It would be really cynical to suppose that they sent someone there a week before and buried everything, but perhaps somewhere in the small print it mentions reenactment?
The other thing that was strange was why so much of it was in the dark.
Mind you as I have never been detectoring perhaps they do find lots of pretty much worthless things all the time.

Well, according to Mackenzie Crook, it's mostly BOATs and ring pulls.

We're not the only ones thinking it's suspect. Apparently other detectorists are accusing it of the same. Lots of forums and groups claiming it's a set up.
It was filmed in Northallerton near a Roman settlement, Saxon settlement and old Fort. That's a good two hours from Hadrians Wall unless you're a crow.
Apparently it doesn't claim everything was found on the day - I thought it did. I'm pretty sure it did. Although the producers haven't commented.
Commentators are suggesting everything was 'found' by detectorists in the area. Some in the area are saying all they've ever found is rusty nails!

I'm not surprised, TBH. It certainly gave me the impression that it was all found on the day. That's why it felt dodgy. They could avoided all this by interviewing people bringing in things they had found in the past. That would have been just as interesting and wouldn't have felt so fake.

They have said each episode is filmed live in one day and that they are making changes for the next episode. But said nothing to confirm or deny whether everything was found on the same day.
The clapping was apparently spontaneous but then people felt they should do it everytime and they will be advising them not to do it.
They will also advise that it is illegal to go detectoring at night unless you have special permission or are asked to do so as part of a police enquiry. This is normally called night hawking and there were complaints that Strachan was filmed learning how to use the equipment in the dark with a light shining on her.
Obviously the budget doesn't stretch to two days in the field/location which is why so much of it was in the tent in the dark.
There's a great spoof going round where the talking hat from Harry Potter is being offered the part of the tent in the field and isn't keen but the money is good. At the end the hat tells the agent not to sign him up for a second series and the agent says 'Oh I don't think you need worry about that'.
If this is one of the reasons that bloke left BBC Breakfast, he must be calling his agent. Unless as I suspect he's so full of himself that he thinks it's excellent.

Dan thingy? Oh, I thought he came over as really nice on Strictly. I expect he was on the phone to his agent before it had even finished! 😆

He did come over nice on Strictly but he just didn't seem relaxed enough for this format. I have gone off him because he has some whacky fundy Christian ideas and I know people are entitled to them but I am also entitled to think that changes my opinion a bit.
He's not awful just used to sitting on a sofa when presenting I think and it showed.
