I have an Amazon fire stick which makes my non-smart TV smart. I've just replaced the original 1st generation one with a 4k one which is considerably faster and comes in under £30. It too is connected to the TV via the HDMI port. It's also Alexa compatible so if you have an Alexa device you can control it by speech. I only use my Alexa as a bluetooth speaker for my phone, and it's not plugged in when I'm not using it, but I could control the TV through it if I wanted to.

Yes, using something like that, saves a lot of money on buying a new television. Another is the Roku device. Choose whichever one suits you best.

It does of course mean more cables coming out of the back of the TV. On my TV the HDMI port is at back but sideways on, so the fire stick protrudes a little to one side, which doesn't bother me but would bother some. I have friends who have plastered in their cables which presumably means when the time comes to replace the TV, or they rearrange the furniture or move house, they will have to dig them out.!

You need a smart TV to do that, or to get a Chromecast dongle, upload the Chromecast app onto your iPad, and connect it that way.

I have a Chromecast and it's really easy. I have an Android tablet. I downloaded the app, plugged the Chromecast into the TV and it did most of the set up itself. Just a few bits of info, like the WiFi password, to type in.
