If you are interested in the historical, and want something that really is a contrast with the likes of 'Gone With the Wind', then this might be for you. It pulls no punched in its portrayal of America's Antebellum South. It is a fictional story of people attempting an escape from slavery in the southern United States in the 1800s. "The Underground Railroad" was a network of abolitionists, hidden routes, and safe houses that helped enslaved African-Americans escape to freedom in the early to mid-1800s. In the novel and the series, it is an actual railroad complete with engineers, conductors, tracks, and tunnels. Cora, an enslaved woman from Georgia, joins newcomer Caesar to ride the subterranean train to freedom.
Watching the first episode, I wasn't sure if they were accurately portraying the cruelty of slave owners, especially in the scene where the slave owner, burns alive a recaptured escaped slave; so I looked it up, and discovered that in some states, that had actually been a judicial option; a court could sentence you to death in this way.
But, also, the way it portrays slavery, what it really meant to be a slave, someone who could just be treated as an object to be bought and sold at your master's whim. It rightly won many awards.

Someone else told me about this and said they enjoyed it. I watched the film Harriet (I think that’s the title) about Harriet Tubman which was excellent. She got out via the railroad and then helped lots of others, a very brave woman. I didn’t think they ever actually used a real railroad for these escapes though.
