To Richmond yesterday with the theatre group were there a packed audience for this show. I suspect many coach parties but the road was up outside so can’t vouch for that. I only recently saw the film and sequel of this so wondered if I should bother to go but decided to show group solidarity. I found it really enjoyable and extremely well performed. The singing was very impressive and the on stage musicians were good. (Any show with a piano accordion gets an extra point from me!)
The only downsides I spotted were the lead actor who sounded as if he was coming down with laryngitis. I expected him to be the dominant vocal but he wasn’t so I wonder if he was saving his voice for the speaking parts. I did ask my neighbour if she thought he sounded rough, and she was surprised he hadn’t been replaced, not because he was delivering a poor performance for us but because he should be resting his voice. In the film and the show I found the character of Jim quite off putting as he is such a miserable, domineering git! Also Susan Penhaligon didn’t appear and was replaced, very capably, by a member of the ensemble. I read she wasn’t on in a review so wonder if she doesn’t do matinées.
For the rest of the players, I thought they were all excellent especially Jason Langley who played Danny with great energy and humour. He was like a jumping bean!
This went down an absolute storm at Richmond, deafening applause and cheers: it’s a real crowd pleaser. So two big successes in a row for me at that theatre, 👍.

I forgot to mention, I noticed that the grandmother was wearing some Seasalt tops! Good link to a Cornish company there, 😀.

Saw it myself a couple of weeks ago. I enjoyed it too. My friend also made a laryngitis comment about Gadass which surprised me. I had noticed that his voice was very gruff, but I just thought it was his way of getting into character because it definitely suited the role.
But other than that, yes, I thought the whole production was wonderful and thoroughly enjoyed it and glad you enjoyed it too, Marion. I’m going to see the men themselves in April 👍
