Well now. This was a bit of a curate’s egg if I’m honest. I didn’t quite know what to expect and if you take it as a simple jukebox musical of Whitney’s songs, then it is certainly a real toe tapper with song after song belted out. If you expected a little more nuance and emotional engagement from the story, then it is a tad disappointing (ie if you are a theatre snob like me I guess!). I have never seen the film but after googling think there are a couple of differences here
The execution was pretty impressive but the vocals were so LOUD. You feel as if your ears are bleeding at times. The dancing was pretty good from the ensemble although, to quote Craig, it felt a little placed at times… get me! This tour has Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton for the evening shows and reviews I have read say her singing is great but the acting is not so hot. We had understudy Samantha Mbolekwa and I felt that she was a bit flat at times, or pitchy at least. Like many an X Factor singer she can belt out the big notes but the nuanced areas go a bit awry. The bodyguard was Arden Callaghan from Emmerdale and he did well, but I didn’t buy him and Rachel as “the greatest love of all” by a long shot. Nicki Marron was Emily-Mae and she was great, super voice, and good acting, far better than the lead imho.
The Wimbledon audience left a lot to be desired in terms of etiquette: there was some fracas behind us at the start and endless chat. That all got my goat. But at the end, riotous applause, standing ovation and of course a big singalong for the encore which was very good fun.
