This is one of the hottest tickets in town, apparently, and also, I would guess, one of the dearest. I think the run has just been extended to January. I refused to pay for my usual sort of seat so went up a level and sat in row A of the upper circle and actually had a very good view. This is an immersive production so lots of people wandering about through the proceedings, but because of that they stage the action on rising podiums so that helped with the sight line for me. And it also wasn’t a bad climb because you go downstairs for the stalls and the foyer is higher than you think. I did scan the bar for evidence of nuts being on sale, but couldn’t see any!
So I thought this was a very good production, extremely lively and a cast giving their all. Some of the singing was a little pitchy but generally it was really well done. The two big names here are Daniel Mays as Nathan Detroit and Marisha Wallace as Miss Adelaide. I was astonished that DM would be in a larky musical because he seems quite serious to me. He did his part well but had the most peculiar legs!!!! He is either very pigeon toed or made an odd stylistic choice! MW stole the show for me… no pitch issues for her, thank you very much. She really filled the whole theatre. She was terrific in the new, pared back Oklahoma as Ado Annie and I would say that is the better show, but then I think it has the better songs too.
The audience went wild yesterday, with the groundlings almost beside themselves. Sit Down Your Rocking The Boat was the big swinger which got them all dancing and clapping. I didn’t see it benefitted all that much from being immersive at first but when they got to the Havana scenes there was a bit of fiesta going on and they used all the space, which is of course the stalls and stage area with all the furniture ripped out. So pretty big! So all in all it was a jolly good day out, I’d give it four stars but Oklahoma would get five.
