Somehow I don’t think this one will tour or be extended! I had a gap in my theatre going so booked this as it stars Liz White who is not seen enough on our screens imho, and then I didn’t really read much about it. Turns out it is a Clean Break production which group is involved with women from the criminal justice system and, I guess, tells their stories. It is a 90 minute straight through show.
After a normal start on the surface, it transpires this is about sexual child abuse. The mother, Mary, has just finished a prison term for perverting the course of justice, having stayed silent after her step daughter brought a case against her father, now deceased. Mary is just a horrible old bat though! No contrition whatsoever. She is played by Brid Brennan who was the horrible old bat in Hope Street, but spoke here with a Yorkshire accent. Liz Smith and Andrea Lowe (DCI Banks) play her two daughters. I didn’t know the other three women but thought the one paying the abused step daughter was the best of the lot.
It was actually a pretty good show! Very involving and the time sped by. The audience were very appreciative. It wasn’t totally bleak, there was a fair bit of humour, but as more is revealed of the evil dead husband the story switches it’s emphasis and is very moving, rather than just making you want to shake the mother. Now had I read more about this before I booked I might not have gone but I am jolly glad I did.
