When I booked this I thought it was a new show but in fact it debuted seven years ago and was a great success. It transferred to New York, and flopped, and has returned for a revival here until August. It is written by the film’s writer and the book and music are by Tim Minchin who also wrote Matilda the Musical.
The weatherman antihero is played by Andy Karl who was in the original and his producer Rita is played by Tanisha King. They both acquitted themselves well and the rest of the cast are a very energetic and enthusiastic ensemble.
I thought this was good, but I couldn’t make out all the words which was a bit annoying. I know I didn’t book a relaxed performance but there was a lot of humming and almost groaning from a chap (clearly with neurological issues) in a wheelchair in the row behind which also gave way to almost Tourette’s style shrieks at times. So that was a bit distracting and obviously didn’t help with the audibility. There was an exceptional scene in the second act when a trick/sleight of hand but more a sleight of body was played out three times and I couldn’t spot how they did it at all. And on the trek back to Waterloo I was behind two women who were raving about it and equally dumbfounded.
The Theatre was pretty much full and it got a rapturous reception, unusually for the Old Vic it also got a standing ovation! I enjoyed it but wish I could have got all the words, and this wasn’t an issue in the other two plays I saw this month.
