The new series started on BBC1 last night and featured a possible Elizabeth Frink sculpture. I love this programme although I do find the staged investigations by Fiona Bruce a bit irritating. This one was a particularly difficult task and, as usual, I found the experts' input fascinating. Also " as usual" with modern pieces of art I began by thinking I wouldn't look at it twice and then the more I saw of it, the more I came to appreciate it and rather wish it was mine! This piece definitely had character I felt.

I was surprised last night that no comment was made about the similarities between the child in the picture being investigated and the one in The Strawberry Girl. To me it was striking how similar both subjects poses were especially the clasped hands, the angle of the head and both had the same oddly shaped mouth.

Another worthwhile show but not quite up to the story of the week before. I would have thought Glyn Hopkin was delighted with the outcome. He got far more advertising equivalent value from an hour's publicity on the BBC than he'd paid for the painting. You can understand how he manages to collect fine art when you see what his main dealerships charge for annual services and repairs. And I was surprised that an international expert like Philip Mould wasn't aware of the pro-seller bias built-in to French art auction 'laws'.

My daughter and I predict - (after some wine obviously) that Fake or Fortune will be the BBC's next scandal.
Our idea is that Ms Bruce and co-presenters have a stash of very good quality paintings in their attics. Some possibly genuine, some just brilliant. They buy these from people enquiring about the show, to whom they say "Oh this is a ten bob bit of Victoriana, nothing like a Turner. If you don't want it I'll give you £250 for it".
Come retirement they will try to cash in and hopefully all the conned sellers are dead.
