So the premise of this show is that an American former child star with terrible paparazzi troubles, drink and sex scandals (think Lynsey Lohan) goes to Norway to get away from all that and star in a film of Hedda Gabler. The director is an enigmatic man and also, imho, an outrageous bully. The star of the show was Antonia Thomas from The Good Doctor who is actually British.
Well, I thought this was pretty dreadful and I have sat through some pretentious sh*t in my time. I could barely hear the actors in the first half, and complained about that so it did seem louder in the second half. It was supposed to be Scandi Uber cool, but none of the cast really had the acting chops to carry it off. I think they reckoned this was like an Ivo van Hove mega trendy production but it just didn’t get there. I found the way the Norwegians treated the star, almost deconstructing her, was very uncomfortable to watch, bullying really. By the time we got towards the climax, they had covered the stage in green material, dropped green curtains and the other cast members were wearing quasi green screen unitards and head coverings. I mean, WTAF was that about. Frankly if I was playing Hedda and had been given the gun I would have happily shot the director. Also, we had occasional conversations in Norwegian! I mean seriously?
I was sitting next to a lady who was very knowledgeable about theatre and thought this was dreadful. However to my amazement most of the audience returned after the interval and it got good applause. Some people stood up! Why?? If it ever tours and lands near you, don’t bother is my advice. It did get quite amusing by the end I guess, but sadly unintentionally.

Sounds fun! Was the green stuff meant to be a comment on green screens in films?

Yes. When the guy playing Hedda’s lover dies (I won’t bore you with it all but he wanders out into the snow in his underpants), the director says they have enough footage to replace him using green screen. I have no idea if that can be done but people have been edited out of film footage shot so far and replaced for the rest of the film haven’t they, as in after a death or a disgrace. But it really didn’t make much of a point TBH and by then I didn’t care either way, 😂😂. I just wanted to hear a gunshot at the earliest opportunity. I really couldn’t understand whether the point was that using green screen was bad, or whether they just wanted the effect on stage IYKWIM. I thought it was all a bit style over substance.

Well the reviews are in and they are all uniformly good!!! Mostly they thought the green screen bit at the end was ridiculous and unnecessary (agree) but they all thought the lead actress was terrific (disagree) and the production was great (disagree). It certainly could have been great but I found the acting quite weak as I could barely hear the lead actress at times. Maybe it was my seat location or maybe they are more forgiving than I am.
