Well I braved the elements big time to see this! Torrential rain and an awkward theatre to get to (by which I mean I had to change trains on the Tube, 😂😂) and I couldn’t find it at first. Nevertheless, when I got there it seemed like one of the smallest theatres in the West End! The stalls only ran in full rows to K with 19 seats. It was a sell out in the stalls and for £40 a reasonably priced ticket.
This was really, really good. Very funny, a bit silly and no big memorable tunes as in a Lloyd Webber say. There is an ensemble cast of 5, none of whom I recognised and from looking at the website I think they may rotate. Given they are dramatising the World War II operation to float a body into Spain carrying false papers about an Allied invasion of Sardinia with practically no props, I thought they did brilliantly. It was very slick and imaginatively staged and they changed character simply by putting on, say, a flat cap (Cockney), spectacles on a chain (Secretary) or thick horn rimmed glasses (boffin), often in the space of one song. The casting is also gender blind and that worked perfectly well too.
A couple in my group were less than impressed. One found it a bit silly, another I think may have been expecting a serious dramatisation. But I thought it was great as did those near me and indeed the rest of the audience. Big cheers and a standing ovation at the end. And the singing was absolutely on point the whole time.
