Did anyone see this? It’s been on ITVX for a while but aired over Christmas, a biopic in three parts of Noelle Gordon and her sacking from Crossroads. It’s written by Russel T Davies and has a lot of heart. The Crossroads cast are all there, and Tony Adams is her best friend, almost played as a gay best friend but not quite because TA is straight! But it was a very nice show and she had an interesting back story. There is even a scene of her being selected by John Logie Baird himself! There is also a one hour documentary about her but I haven’t watched that yet. Helena Bonham Carter is wonderful as Noelle, Mark Gatiss is Larry Grayson and, new to me but really good, Augustus Prew is Tony Adams.

I enjoyed it and the following documentary too as it brought back memories of growing up in the ATV Midlands television region. I remember Noele Gordon when she was at the height of her fame in the 1960s and 70s, not only for Crossroads but also from watching Lunchbox with my mum during the school holidays in the 50s. You could always tell she was a force to be reckoned with, a woman ahead of her time really. I felt Helena Bonham Carter captured that in the way she portrayed Nollie. The whole thing was very good.

In a way (and I’m sure she didn’t regret it) it seems a pity she got stuck in Crossroads for 18 years really. She had such a varied career before that and was very good in Gypsy it seems, so if she hadn’t been on the box she could have been big in theatre. Or perhaps done more prestigious/demanding telly.
