Well I had high hopes for this so ended up slightly disappointed. I don’t quite know where it missed a trick, but there was something amiss. The whole thing is carried off by a cast of three (2 women, 1 man) with a gender blind script. There are barely any props and the change of characters is indicated largely through the addition of a bonnet or jacket etc. As in Operation Mincemeat , this sort of quick character change works very well. It occurred to me this would be quite an easy production to tour as it needs little staging really. However, whilst there are elements of the original novel retained, much is cut and a lesbian romance (not graphic) introduced. Also, one scene has our heroine playing in the field with her young brother when her first period starts and we have a blood spattered petticoat. I failed to see what we gained from that. At the end, the heroine (and I did get confused here) seems to come out of character and talk about her characters being within the pages of a book… so was she Jane at that point? I don’t know.
The play was executed with much brio by the cast, although at some points I did find it hard to hear the heroine (and this is a SMALL theatre). The school party upstairs went mad for it though! Our group was a less enthusiastic but the member next to me left at the interval. I certainly didn’t think it was that bad and some of it was very funny. It certainly wasn’t as good as Pride and Prejudice (Sort Of), but quite good until it lost its way at the end.
