I have never watched this from beginning to end but did so the other night. It was praised and slated in equal measure when it first appeared and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I'm not a fan of horror films but it seemed to me to be a very good study of mounting fear of the unknown, and an example of how the unseen is a lot more frightening than visual horror effects which are disgusting rather than scary.
I did have one thought though – when they realised they were lost, why didn't they follow the stream downstream?

Oh don't be sensible - that spoils a lot of films.

The do cross the stream a number of times and comment that it's the same stream, and they also try to head south and end up back where they started, presumably because something in the ground (or the witch) is interfering with the compass bearing.
