“This is the best thing I have seen in months”, said a friend who is an avid theatre goer. As the Lyric is cheap and I had never been there, finding Hammersmith a bit of a geographical challenge what with the one way system, I decided to give it a go.
The Faith Healer by Irish dramatist Brian Friel is a series of four monologues. Frank, the FH gives the first and last, the second is by his wife/mistress Grace and the third by his manager Teddy. In this cast Frank is played by Declan Conlan, grace by Justine Mitchell and Teddy by Nick Holder. They are all good actors. The monologues relate some key incidents from their lives but with slight variations so there is an element of unreliable narration.
I thought this was good but certainly not great. The main trouble was I couldn’t always make out what Frank was saying so that pissed me off! However, as a piece it held the audience absolutely transfixed and you could hear a pin drop. No coughing, shuffling, phones going off here, and the time did whizz by. It got a generally good reception.
Before it started I sat next to a chap and read my book and then I saw him on the way out so we discussed the play. He said it’s a very difficult piece to perform and added he was an actor. Well do you know I think it might have been Graham Seed, only the late Nigel from The Archers! But maybe not, 😂😂. But I googled him and it looks about right.
