This was (I thought) a play about Anne Brontë, a refreshing change of emphasis. Well, it turned out to be about the sisterly dynamic largely from the perspective of Charlotte! She was by far the main character. That said, I thought this was a very good play. It got mixed reviews but I thought it zipped along and, largely without sets or props, created a really good narrative of their lives. The language is quite rude (quite a few F bombs) and modern, but it was funny and voiced their struggle to get published under the patriarchy. It certainly didn’t do Charlotte any favours as she came across as an extremely domineering egomaniac.
Charlotte was played by Gemma Whelan (Upstart Crow, The Tower) and she was excellent. All of the cast were in fact very good, no weak links, but I didn’t know them. It was a very diverse casting, including a black actress playing Emily and an actress with only one arm playing Anne.
I am surprised the reviews were so mixed because I thought this was both interesting and great fun. The audience laughed a lot, it got very warm applause with lots of cheering.
