Just started watching this political drama and it's quite good. The premise is that when all the Senators and Congress are all together for the State of the Union speech, there is always one Senator in a undisclosed location. This is so that if there is a disaster that kills everyone at the Speech, he or she will become President. And that is what happens. The guy who takes over is quite low in the pecking order but has to step up and be the Leader the country needs after a huge disaster, which in this case is the bombing of the Capitol building.
And he does. Played by Keifer Sutherland, he turns out to be smarter, tougher and more honourable than anyone thought.
It did strike me, when watching, that you can always tell when the American political system is in trouble because a TV company will produce a drama showing how the Americans wish the real President behaved. As if they are saying 'this is what you should be like, you crook!' The last one was The West Wing when Clinton was Prez.

I have watched the first two episodes of this and I must admit I am enjoying it too. I like political dramas, my VERY favourite being West Wing. If this one is half as good I will be happy. Can't help but wonder if there is really such a thing as the Designated Survivor , or whether we have that system here! Seems sensible in a way, I think. I also liked the American version of House of Cards, totally different to the British version but still very good.

I'm actually finding the FBI investigation more interesting at the moment cos the stuff with the Prez is fairly predictable.

Netflix seem to have removed it. I can't find it anywhere. Maybe it's because of the election in real life is only 11 days away but it seems odd. It's not like my vote is going to be influenced!

I've just this minute finished watching episodes 3 and 4, so try again maybe there was a fault somewhere.

I think I know why I couldn't find it. There's only 5 episodes on there and I've seen them all.

I'm still waiting for Jack Bauer to kick in. Enjoying it immensely, an interesting premise and a long way to go with a lot of paths to follow. It did strike me, when watching, that you can always tell when the American political system is in trouble because a TV company will produce a drama showing how the Americans wish the real President behaved. As if they are saying 'this is what you should be like, you crook!' The last one was The West Wing when Clinton was Prez. Interesting thought because President Dalton, an excellent Keith Carradine in 'Madam Secretary', plays with an equally straight bat or is easily brought around to the "right thing" in the course of 42 minutes (not that the show is about him, but similar in relation to TWW).

Ah, yes. I forgot about that one as I haven't seen it, not having HBO. But it sounds a similar thing.

I'm getting really fed up with the Prez. He's far too Peter Perfect for me. But the FBI strand is interesting.

I ask because, without wanting to give too much away, he does start to struggle with the dichotomy of being an "ideal" politician and having to actually be a politician. Im beginning to worry that Maggie Q's body cannot support the weight of her head.

Ermmm.... episode 5, I think. The one where he had to talk to the Governers about forming a Senate and they were asking tough questions and he gave this off-the-cuff brilliant speech that made them all change their minds and decide he's a wonderful man after all.
I rolled my eyes pretty hard at that bit.

I also liked the American version of House of Cards, totally different to the British version but still very good. I think it is a real thing, cause they mention it in season one of The West Wing 'He Shall From Time To Time' as well. Donna:Roger Tribbey. Josh:Yes. Donna:I don't know why you're picking the Secretary of agriculture. Josh:'Cause the Attorney General, the Secretary of State, Defence and the Treasury are famous faces and we want the camera to find them. Donna:So if the Capitol building blows up the man my country will be looking to is the Secretary of Agriculture? Madam Secretary is good as well, but she's always in the right and that one kid, the girl who likes clothes is so annoying. There was also a political show called Commander In Chief with Genna Davis as the Prez and Political Animals with Sigoney Weaver as a politician I haven't got round to watching this or House Of Cards but I'm gonna try over Christmas, get through some boxsets.
