As some of you know, my mother has been in hospital for a few days after food poisoning from a bad burger. She is coming out tomorrow but still won't be able to eat much. Has anyone else had it? What did you eat while you were recovering?

I had it a long time ago... it was a badly-cooked sausage in a cafe in my case I remember lots of soup and dry toast at first, progressing to chicken breast and a few vegetables ... took a while before I wanted anything other than really plain stuff. I hope your Mum will recover well and quickly

I hope your Mum will recover well and quickly Miranda the advice above is spot on. I had a quadruple bypass followed by a tummy bug and was dehydrating rapidly. Seems strange to have liquid food in that situation but it works and I soon recovered.
Hope Mum is soon feeling better.

If the gut's been invaded by a hostile bug, then it's probably a good idea to repopulate it with friendly bacteria, or encourage the growth of good bacteria., so live yoghurt - bifidus etc- . If she can take it - Or fermented foods like sauerkraut ( long shot, I know, after you've felt ill). I think the sooner the gut microbiome gets back to a healthy state, the better.
This also applies when someone's been taking a lot of antibiotics.
Hope she bounces back soon.

Do those probiotic yoghurts actually work then?

I think they do,but you can get a course of probiotic capsules which will work quicker. I got mine from Tesco, but they sell them in lots of chemists and supermarkets. I got a 15 day course(two a day).It really helps sort out the immune system. I had had a lot of antibiotics recently and was feeling "under the weather".

I think that little & often will be the order of the day. Plenty of fluids. If she likes them, a selction of barley water might be a. Good idea. Bananas are good, maybe a poached or boiled egg & toast, a small bunch of grapes. I would also advise a multi vit with minerals as she probably won't be up to eating properly for quite a while.

Anything she fancies really. Rice pudding always went down well with my boys.

I had dry crackers at first, then graduated to toast with very little butter on, or scrambled egg, then work up to a boiled potato or the nice fluffy potato inside a jacket potato - but don't eat the skin.
I think the live yogurt is a good idea, it helps your stomach to rebalance. You can buy rehydration salts in chemists, all you do is dissolve them in water and drink them down - the ones I get are faintly blackcurrant flavoured and come in ready measured sachets for one dose at a time.

Those must be what she was talking about yesterday. She said something about powder you dissolve in water.

Rehydration Salts, Miranda. I take them abroad with me in case of "funny tummy". Also take Imodium with me which helps when you get "The runs"

I'll get some from the chemist tomorrow, along with the probiotic capsules.
