Wonder what effects they will portray as a result of Sister Mary Cynthia's Electric shock therapy. Were there really supported accommodation homes like the one Reggie ended up in at that time? My mother had electric shock therapy, it didn't help one iota apart from some memory loss and not the 'bad' memories either.I was 18 at the time and thought it inhumane and useless then and still do now.

I hope they manage to get Sister Mary Cynthia back to Nonnatus house. She will be at least among friends.

Whenever Timothy stuck his head round the door I told him to **** ***. He is so ghastly!
I think Mrs Turner said there were only three homes like that one in the whole of the country so maybe it is an accurate portrayal and they were just unbelievably lucky to get a space for Reggie.
That poor Sister Mary Cynthia! Not very caring of the Mother House just to bung her in there is it?
I think that shock therapy is a lot different now from what it was then. A friend of mine had it some years ago and it was very successful for her. I was horrified when I heard but it all went OK.

I could be wrong but the patients at mental hospitals were treated very poorly and were often considered guinea pigs for new treatments, once they tag you as mentally ill your not believed or trusted and that makes it hard to complain about treatment. The turners are now in the suburbs aren't they.

My Mum also had ECT waaaaay back and I'm not even sure what for. I think she most likely had post natal depression after my older sister.

Not sure if some of tonight's topics were all that relevant or known about widely at the time or just BBC scriptwriters using hindsight with a bit of poetic license ?

Thought the FGM story was done very well and I could have cried at the young bright girl being told she was going on 'holiday' was heart wrenching. It's unbelievable that it's still going on to this day and mainly down to woman folk who've had this barbarism done to themselves. Have they never asked themselves why were they born this way to start off with? Cruel beyond belief as is circumcision, or child abuse as it should be called! Really getting hacked off now with Vanessa Redgrave's narration at the beginning and the end, load of old tosh being spouted by a voice which sounds like she's smoking 60 a day.

FGM has been practised for centuries and medical staff would have seen it. It's only very recently that there has been widespread public attention and condemnation.

That's a very simplistic view of FGM. The society the women live in expect them to have the Cut. Just as there are things women in Western societies have done to themselves for centuries. It's barely a 100 years ago that we stopped wearing corsets after centuries of squeezing our internal organs into unnatural shapes.
And before you jump to any conclusions, no I don't condone it. I hate it. But I also know it's way more complicated a situation than you know.

I found this a very upsetting episode, in fact I felt quite sick at times. I was also furious that she allowed her sister to go back home to be cut. And poor Mary Cynthia as well! Then along comes nauseating Timothy Turner so it was time to swear at the TV, lol.

I think they are running out of topics,so it was inevitable that this would come up.
Can't just be ,woman having baby ,woman has baby, all live happy ever after, there is no drama in that.
But this programme is still my Sunday evening cosy look at,only found this one seemed to drag a bit.

One HUGE difference Miranda if you don't mind me pointing it out, women were not MADE to wear corsets, they had a choice to follow the fashion of the day, stupid as we now know it to be. These babies and young girls have no choice, they are mutilated in the most inhumane way possible, causing the most devastatingly painful and psychological effects sometimes lasting a lifetime but then you know that. To somehow trivialise this with western women wearing corsets is quite frankly absurd and beneath you. There are lots of reasons why FGM is thought to have started but it sure as hell isn't relevant now, apart from the fact that some women still believe their daughters won't get a husband if they've not had the procedure done (So it's also down to men) . You say you don't condone it and yet find excuses for it still happening, it's not complicated it's very simple it's wrong, END OF!

It's easy enough to say END OF cos that means you don't have to think about the reasons why it happens and why women do it. You can just get all righteous about it and feel good in your righteous anger. But seeing as you aren't actually doing anything about it your righteous anger isn't helping anyone.
And if you read my post with any understanding of the subject you would see that I'm not making excuses at all. I just have more knowledge. Righteous anger is all very good but it can make you shortsighted. Which is something the writers of CTM didn't suffer from.

Fine, I'll carry on with my righteous anger and you carry on with your understanding.
