So who is Ellen's father? Her brother, her father or none of them.
She said she was steeped in sin or something along those lines, so why?
We now know she went into the drugs/drinks downward spiral when she came back in September and was then admitted to the clinic where she met the paganists. I think that is a sideshow.
Did she know more about the death of Dr Azir's son, was Mrs Azir really involved or was this the sin Ellen talked about - making Mrs Azir prime suspect.
Did Bobby do more than adjust the starter motor on Cal's car after he asked about Ellen's mum?
Lots more to come - how many more episodes?

I'm finding the multiple red herrings more difficult to keep track of than in previous series, perhaps because I haven't been watching each episode more than once as I usually do. The timescale of Ellen's demise is also confusing - the two assassins were hot on her trail immediately and we know they had already found out from her flatmate that she'd gone when Ruth went to her flat, so the police and the assassins would have arrived on Shetland at about the same time, very shortly after Ellen herself.
So when did Ellen have time to go the clinic - the same day? She went at night, I think Azir said, but she was there long enough for Amma to meet her and smoke the cigarette in the house where Ellen was hiding out.
It now appears the sheep mutilation is irrelevant (not to the sheep!).
Poor old Cal - do we think Bobby Bain did something to his van and if so, when and why? He didn't know until the meeting with Cal that Cal wasn't going to go into business with him. Or maybe Cal lost control of the van because he was drunk.

I was immediately suspicious as soon as Bobby Bain opened that bonnet. He was up to no good. Cal's van was definitely tampered with.
So many questions. Too many for me to list here. Finding it so hard to like anyone other than Tosh, Ellen's father (is he?) and little brother and the sheep.

Oh, I quite like Cal too. And that other policeman and... that poor soul with the poorly mum. Warmed to Ashley's character a bit last night, but can't remember why. Oh, I quite like her brother. So maybe just forget what I said upthread

So Peter Ayre came to Shetland in 2006, aged 16. That makes him 33 now. He looks well over 43 to me!

I thought that too. Mind you, I'm rubbish at ageing people.

I’m looking forward to seeing how it all works out, as I’m pretty much at sea with it all. Enjoying it though! I agree Peter Ayre looks well over 33, must be all the passive smoking at the bonfires!

Two more episodes to go. They certainly manage to pack a lot into each one with many twists and turns so I can't imagine where it will end up. Quite apart from the crime solving aspect I am wondering how it will come about that Ruth stays in Shetland and - presumably - takes the inspector post left vacant by Jimmy Perez and being filled temporarily by Tosh. Maybe that won't happen and there will be some other reason to keep her there but then how will that play out in future series, assuming there will be any? Fingers crossed.....

That's a good point - we only knew that Ashley Jensen was joining the cast for this series, not that she was replacing Jimmy as DI. I guess though one of two things will happen if there is another series: either the post will become vacant and she will be appointed, thereby turning her back on what was presumably a promising career in London - I would assume that Shetland is regarded as a bit of a backwater professionally - and Tosh will remain as a DS; or Ruth will go back to London, Tosh will be appointed and the matter of having to move elsewhere will be quietly forgotten. Or Tosh will leave, to a resounding 'Nooooo!' from viewers!
The writers / producers do ignore police protocol when it suits them - having legal representation when being interviewed, Tosh's ridiculous post of 'temporary DI' (glossed over as her own way of describing it), Sandy repeatedly getting away with blurting out confidential details to interested parties which has resulted in at least one death as I recall, for example.

Of I think police forces get away with a lot more than that!

Didn’t Tosh say she couldn’t be made DI unless she accepted a transfer to another force, and she didn’t want to leave Shetland?

Yes that's why she explained she hadn't gone for the job.

Yes, that is the reason at the moment but it can't go on indefinitely so there will hopefully be a resolution which will mean Ruth staying officially or Ruth going and either Tosh or A.N. Other getting the job. That's if there is another series, of course. The script is all over the place at the moment, but it usually is at this stage since they moved beyond the original novels.
