Yes it took me a few seconds to twig it was a flashback! I agree about the tone. I don’t think Ashley Jensen has done a bad job at all as Calder, but would prefer that character to be a one-off visitor rather than a permanent member of the cast. For the tone of the show, and as someone with intimate knowledge of the islands, they should promote Tosh. I wonder if they felt the actress was too unknown to lead a big series? I think she would be fine. Maybe this is being used as an interim series to lead us to that. But she is popular with the fans of the series so I don’t think it is a problem.

Except she said she would have to move away to take a promotion and wouldn't be able to go for the job. She said they were the rules.

Yes, she did. However, if the series is to continue they will have to resolve it.

I have no idea if that really is a rule in Police Scotland but since this is fiction they could just quietly forget that and pretend it was never said. After all they do seem to play fast and loose with normal police procedures very often and if they did go down that route I for one wouldn't complain.

What a very sad episode. I ended up feeling sorry for everyone.

Well I did say there was something not right with Ellen's parents.
Too many loose ends for me.
Are we supposed to believe that a London drug dealer was so concerned about the loss of his money that he sent two hitmen to the Shetlands and then what, just forgot about it. He knew what Ellen was called why didn't he send someone up there to threaten the family.
Was the drug dealing cousin who told them Bobby had the money just getting off from his drug dealing. If that young man told the police, he would certainly have told another hitman!
Did the Azir's get charged with anything. Did their cleaner get charged with blackmail.
Too much not tied up for me.

"Too much not tied up for me."
And me. I think the number of loose ends left hanging stems from the huge number of red herrings strewn along the way of the series - far too many to maintain a coherent plot imo.I also feel it could have done without the incompetent hit men who were (almost) like a comedy duo and totally out of place in a series like Shetland.
One thing I do have to compliment the makers on are the opening and closing scenes of the islands. Beautiful, beautiful photography and the music fitted it so well.

It is the style of this series, since it stopped being based on Ann Cleeves' novels, to have lots of red herrings but they have generally been satisfactorily dealt with. The assassin thread was simply forgotten once one of them was in custody and the other dead, the other loose ends not dealt with I guess once they stopped being relevant to Ellen's death.
I had to remind myself who the young man was right at the end, who appeared to be being given the stolen money by Bobby, presumably as recompense for the unpleasantness between the two families but how would it help? He can't spend it unless he's really careful, and if Cassidy does come looking for it again he'll find out who has it. Meanwhile the Bain farm is bankrupt, financially and morally. Very sad though you can't say Grace didn't have it coming! Poor Rory, growing up with all that on his shoulders.
So Ruth is going to stick around for a while, in what capacity was left vague though Tosh identified herself as DI McIntosh, no more 'temporary'. I suppose they'll see what the response is to this series before deciding whether to do another and if they do, resolve her status according to who is in the cast.

Agree about the titles Vicky, but I do wish they would stop mucking around with the theme music!

Surely not the one who stole it on the bus? Why would he deserve it? Tbh I don’t care if there’s another series or not… I dozed off in practically every episode, just didn’t hold my attention as I’d hoped

Of course he'd get manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. He'd spent days worrying about where she was, knowing there were hit men after her. Then she throws it in his face and not in a calm sitting round the table way. Not only finding out she's not his daughter but finding out she's his wife's daughter and sister?? Neice???
We'd all be a bit diminished with that news.

He was the young man whose mother was in hospital and from the state of the house could definitely do with the money. He was Ellen's boyfriend, at least he loved her, we don't know if she returned his feelings but they did spend time together which didn't go down well with Bobby (Ellen's father, but she didn't know that then!).
The young man on the bus who stole the money was hounded out of Shetland by Bobby, who tracked him down after questioning the bus driver. Bobby then took the money and tried to get Cal to go into business with him but Cal was having none of it, in their meeting at the farm before he drove off to his death - another red herring!

I thought it was rather sad and certainly didn’t guess it, but yes, I agree with everyone else about the loose ends.
