I enjoy sewing and so decided to try my hand at making a few bags to sell at an exhibition I was involved with. I bought some remnants of fabric in different patterns and made three small "messenger" bags. I took them to the exhibition on the first day and they were all sold and I have orders for three more, one of which I have completed. I will post a picture when I have made another one. I am quite chuffed!

It's always nice when you sell stuff, isn't it? Shows other people appreciate it.

Here is a photo of one of the bags. I had such a job trying to find where to hang it and finished up hanging it off the newel post!

Oh, that's a messenger bag! Now I get it. They are really pretty! Did you do them from a pattern?

I got the pattern from YouTube, and the instructions. It is actually quite simple to make. It is reversible with the floral material on the outside and the "Alice" fabric on the flap.

That's lovely!
I love making things. At the moment I make jewellery (I love using freshwater pearls and semi precious stones), cards and soap. It's really great when you get positive feedback from customers.

I have some t-shirts with graphics on the front that I am never going to get into again. But someone mentioned on another board that they can be used on the front flap of a messenger bag. So, inspired by that, I'm going to buy some material to go with the graphics and do that!

I don't have a matching pair of legs and feet due to rheumatoid arthritis, so no-one sees them and I usually wear trousers. But this weather is too hot for trousers, so I've just spent a bit of time shortening some long cotton tiered skirts a bit so I don't trip over the hems as I have in the past. Thought it wouldn't take long to just re-hem three. Wrong!
One I could just take up the hem - easy.
Number two had a deep border for the bottom tier, so taking up the hem wouldn't work and keep the look. So that had to be done from the inside by making a bigger seam between two tiers further up. That meant getting the overlocker out and care to make sure I kept the gathers in the lower of the two tiers running straight down.
Number three had different patterned tiers with the bottom one being the largest and lightest-coloured pattern, but having a dark strip of material sewn onto the outside of the bottom hem because it would have looked silly if it had been left light. So I had to removed that strip, cut off the amount needed and then sew the strip back on again.
What should have been an hour or so's work ended up spread over two days, but at least I'm not likely to end up flat on my face tripping over hems now.

Clothes can be much more complicated than they look, can't they? I've taken a few things apart and realised I've bitten off a lot more than I could chew in one day.
I'm having a problem with my sewing machine bobbin. It did the first lot fine but now it's making that horrible chunking noise and knotting up the bobbin thread. I've rethreaded it a couple of times but it's still doing it. Any ideas anyone? Do I need to take the bobbin case out and clean underneath?

Couple of possible solutions -
blunt needle - apparently you should change it every 16 hours of sewing, bobbin thread loosened - remove, check and re-insert build up of lint in the bobbin area - clean.

Ah, blunt needle. It has been a while since I changed it. I will give that a go and also clean out any lint. Thanks.

Also make sure the thread comes from the bobbin in the correct way clockwise or anti clockwise. Have all the guides for the needle thread been used?
