Talking Pictures tomorrow, Saturday 18th, has a few films that I like. Spoilers ahead
4pm-The Magnet With a very young James Fox. I think James Fox is 80, he was 11 in this movie. About the adventures of a boy and a magnet he finds.
7:25pm-The October Man John Mills. I love a good John Mills film and this is good. Directed by Roy Ward Baker (I think), it has Mills as a bit of a broken man after the death of his daughter and him having suffered a brain injury and is now being a accused of murder.
9pm-Personal Services Directed by Terry Jones. I haven't seen this one but want to.
11:40pm-The Comedy Man Kenneth More as a jobing actor and a few other faces including, hooray, Dennis Price. I liked this film when TP showed it last time, there's something quite sad about the actor trying to make it, to get game and fortune, but is ultimately more forfilled in more less well paid roles in rep/regional theatre than the small tv roles and adverts he was getting.
1:20am-A Deadly Affair Based on a John Le Carre novel, with James Mason. There's also a sort of cameo of David Warner and Michael Bryant who are in Edward II and is a play within the movie, when Masons character attends at the end and there's a murder.

'I shot an arrow in the air; she fell to earth in Berkeley Square.' Classic. 🙂 Lol, I love that film. I only watched it recently and adored it. I watched it on Christmas Day, I got the DVD. I also love Dennis Price in Murder Without Crime, its not so much a classic but I like it. They say the name 'Stephen' about 100times though. "I've hated you Stephen, hated you...watching you stuffing yourself with Champagne and cavier, well it's down right unbearable when ones damned hungry." Quoting myself here, but 'Murder Without Crime' is on TP at 10pm tonight. "Stephen, I've enjoyed myself more this last hour or so than I've ever enjoyed myself before."

The Mind Benders The Mind Benders is on TP on Saturday 9th February at 20:25 (it's repeated on Wednesday at 22:05) I love this film. It's a bit strange but I was thinking about it for days after. It's stars Dirk Bogarde, Michael Bryant and Mary Ure and is part based on real experiments that happened in the US to see if brainwashing could happen. It was written by James Kennaway (Violent Playground and Tunes of Glory, both brilliant films, especially the latter with John Mills and Alex Guinness) and directed by Basil Dearden who also directed Violent Playground and had worked with Bogarde on The Blue Lamp, The Gentle Gunman and Victim before. He's also got a back catalogue of enjoyable films, well I like them, which, in some cases deal with social issues of the time. Professor Sharpey (Harold Goldblatt), working in a university research laboratory, is suspected of passing secrets to the Soviet Union, and commits suicide. British intelligence believe that this was due to shame over his betrayal of his country. His former colleague, Doctor Longman (Dirk Bogarde), believes that the sensory deprivation experiments that Sharpey was conducting on himself may have rendered him susceptible to brainwashing. He volunteers to undergo the same tests in order to prove his theory. The British Intelligence officer and a colleague decide to test the theory by trying to brainwash him against his much loved wife."

Now I’ve actually found this channel, I’m right into it.
Lots of stuff to record on the TiVo and perfect for ironing on wet afternoons. Just watched half of That’ll be the Day and wondering why Ringo didn’t do a lot more acting. He was a bit of a natural. Billy Fury playing loosely disguised Rory Storm and Keith Moon as his scary drummer. Very evocative of the era.

I've never heard of this film but I looked it up on Wiki and it sounds terrific! I wonder if the rockabilly band the Stray Cats took their name from the fictional band in this film.
And what a soundtrack! If they released it on CD it could sit in your car or home and provide hours of nostalgic hits.
Wiki says there was also a sequel made called Stardust. Have you seen that? Another amazing soundtrack of greatest hits.

I love this channel to. Very underrated. When I first watched it I thought there was something odd, and then I realised that when they show the end credits they don't squash them up or do voiceovers over the top. The on-screen DOG is small and unintrusive so barely noticeable. And the adverts for upcoming films are really good, they show a clip and then give you relevant info, director, main actors, year and when it's on. Love this channel.
I've seen a few films over the months on here and off youtube and DVD and my faves to look out for are: Dirk Bogarde, my favourite John Mills, always watchable, Mr Denning Drives North was on the other night, I've seen it before but still ended up watching most of it Dennis Price, especially Murder Without Crime and Kind Hearts and Coronets. Donald Sinden Michael Craig Richard Attenborough, Jet Storm was on recently with him and Stanley Baker Jack Hawkins
Alan Bates Tom Courtenay James Mason Trevor Howard Kathleen Harrison. Anthony Quayle, The Woman in The Dressing Gown is good with Yvonne Mitchell, Sylvia Syms and Andrew Ray. Ray and Quayle were also in Serious Incident together which was one of Cliff Richards first films and is really good story.
I saw Tread Softly Stranger a couple of days ago with Diana Dors and George Baker. That was enjoyable.
Can you tell I love this channel?! Theres also Sony Movies Classic, but they show more American films where TP is more British films, they also have this annoying habit of splitting a film in half with a Sony info advert in the middle so when you record you have to be aware to make sure you're recording both bits! Really annoying.

...I find the "beware this film does reflect prevailing attitudes of the time" qualification before some films annoying....I mean they would reflect them wouldn't they...?...

Yeah, I think it's just to advise people, everything now has to be spoon feed to people and lots of people seemed to be offended by everything. Of course some of the language used and views expressed aren't appropriate today and we've become more enlightened, but some of these films are 80years old, of course the views will be different, that doesn't mean they should just be banished never to see the light of day. Since August, when I got into old films, I've watched loads and they're brilliant. Don't ban things just advise and let people make they're own decision.

Yes, how long will it be before we get little slips of paper in C18-20 novels with some sort of disclaimer.
”Please note that this book contains graphic depictions of poverty, child abuse, street crime, anti-semitism and murder” And that’s only Oliver Twist.....
If Dickens turned up in Oxbridge, he’d be lucky to get away with no-platforming. Not to mention Hardy, RL Stevenson, Thackeray, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky..........
Perhaps the volumes will eventually be in cages and require special permission to be opened and read. Trauma therapists lurking in library corners.

Perhaps only once since, athough Stardust was on Amazon Prime last year. Ringo didn’t want to reprise the role of Mike, which was taken up by Adam Faith, another pop star who was better at acting than singing. David Essex wasn’t brilliant at either, but he was very pretty, so got the key role.

One of the best channels on freeview is struggling. Talking Pictures runs on a shoestring anyway but with advertisers nowhere to be seen it looks to be hitting them hard. talkingpicturestv.co.uk/about-talking-pictures-tv/Daily mail (I know) did a good article about them and highlighted some famous faces who watch the channel, apparently Kenneth Branagh and Brian Blessed agree on a film to watch and then discuss it after. Hopefully they can look at getting there support, maybe get them to do a series of interviews where they say what there favourite old films are and why, that might be a way of getting new viewers. Getting people to buy stuff off their website wilk give them extra revenue, and maybe even a gofund me page. It'd be a shame if it closed as there's a market for the channel, 3.5m viewers a week for a high number channel is pretty good. My go to channel is Talking Pictures and Challenge. Sony Movies have started a Classic channel aswell so there must be an audience, although they show more American stuff, they put a 5mins Sony News Update in the middle of films which is annoying if you're recording them and they get a bit obsessed with some films, Strongroom is on at least once a week so I do prefer TP. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8233463/Shedflix-Father-72-daughter-reach-3-5-million-views-week-classic-movie-channel.htmlWhat's a bit annoying from the article is the BBC. Apparently TP have requests for shows such as Z Cars and Dixon of Dock Green but BBC won't give the rights. They aren't showing them, they aren't available to buy but God forbid they should let anyone else show it. Maybe they could try for ITV shows. I've just watch the 1st series of Mr Rose and The Main chance and really enjoyed them.

My personal view (which may be quite wrong) is that Britbox is affecting such decisions. BBC, ITV, C4 & C5 will now not want to let go of their remaining back catalogue which could be made available through Britbox. In the BBC's case, the possibility of charging for iPlayer in the future may also be a factor.

These type of shows Havent been broadcast in years, before Britbox was a thing, and they Havent been brought out on DVD. Some of them, from the 60s/70s won't be shown due to their content, views of the era, which means they'll never get shown and there are some absolutely great stories and actors which will just be lost.
