Yes - that is the point I suppose. Neither Sheldon nor Amy ("Shamy") would believe such things....

I have to catch up on this on Friday afternoons, so am up to speed now.
Does anybody else think it is getting a bit tired now, and should end this series if Amy and Sheldon tie the knot?I watch the earlier ones often ,still funny but the later ones don't seem so.
Might be me,but Friends went out on a high, don't think they should just drag BBT on,this is the 12th year after all and everything has a shelf life.

I couldn't say - I'm at least 7 series behind you lot, having only got into it the last couple of years.

I don't, actually. It did go through a bit of a sticky patch in the 8th series but then they changed the writers and I think the standard has gone back up again.

I still think it's worth watching, though I will miss the occasional inclusion of Stephen Hawking and hope that Bob Newhart will still pop up sometimes. I was disappointed that, in the episode where they visited a scientist in his reclusive cabin, the scientist wasn't actually a scientist but an actor. Maybe I'm misremembering, but the extras who've appeared have always been actual and well-known scientists or actors as themselves (apart from Bob Newhart), not someone playing a scientist. Viewers last week in the US were 12.6 million and on the night it was shown it had the highest figures of all programmes. variety.com/2018/tv/news/tv-ratings-big-bang-theory-1202798736/

Oh we have to see the various children make a proper appearance. Think of Modern Family where the next generation now drive many of the stories.
Amy and Sheldon must reproduce - can you imagine him at the pre natal classes, in the birthing suite etc?
Even a poor episode of BBT is a million times better than much of the comedy on TV.

I do think sitcoms have a shelf life, but I think BBT still has plenty of mileage left/possibilities for the future.

True. It could run and run - actors permitting.

I just wish they would drop the canned laughter! It's the only thing that spoils it.

It is filmed in front of a live audience, isn't it? So the laughter is genuine.

Do you think so? It sounds canned to me

I'm sure, on the dvds, you see the cast coming to the front of the set - out of the familiar apartment or comic book store - and being introduced to the live audience. Like Mrs Brown's Boys. Doesn't mean the laughter track is not "edited" to suit the broadcast, but it is not taken from a pre existing tape as far as I am aware.

Filmed before a live audience.
Not many comedies are nowadays, and l think canned laughter is not used much at all nowadays,in USA and UK.

Doesn't mean the laughter track is not "edited" to suit the broadcast, but it is not taken from a pre existing tape as far as I am aware. Yes, I googled it after my previous post and it is filmed in front of a live audience. But they have to heavily edit it as sometimes the laughter goes on much too long. Or occasionally, it's the reverse and the laughter isn't as hearty as maybe it had been during the first take. Maybe by the tenth take, it's not quite so funny anymore. So the consensus seems to be it makes it sound a little false. I guess that had been what I'd been responding to.

There is also the famous "whoop when your favourite character appears" problem.....
