It was the screaming he was doing. A real high-pitched squeal guaranteed to make a parent panic.

Very petty of Benton to blab about Carter's wealthy background. He's a curious character, we're obviously supposed to admire him but he is a bit of a s*** in his dealings with people. Then again, you can appreciate his chippy attitude in the face of the patient who knew Carter and Wild Willy's sycophancy. Though it was exaggerated (I hope!), I'm sure that sort of thing does go on especially in the US which has no NHS.
Speaking of whom, the sooner they get rid of that idiot of an ER chief the better (actually they did – I couldn't remember ever seeing him before but he's only in seven episodes and is not there at the beginning of series 2, when Morgenstern reappears as if he'd never been away). As we know the glorious and ultimately tragic figure Greene becomes it's not a bad idea to give him doubts at this stage.

I always saw Benton as the epitome of a surgeon against Green who is the epitome of an ER doctor. Surgeons do tend be arrogant and more inclined to see a patient as a problem rather than a person. Carter is the one caught in the middle on a kind of Hero's Journey.

Thanks for the ER thread. I thought I had started one before? Watched bits of them all again tonight, around The Durrells Isn't Susan and Chloe's mum just the worst? Not only "not wanting to do it all again" but saying to Susan that she couldn't believe she was expecting her parents to help! What a position for Big Susie! Odd but I couldn't remember Wild Willy either. I looked it up and he did 7 episodes but he obviously didn't make an impression on me. The coast is being cleared for the inevitable reunion of Carol and Doug.

It was originally on the CBS thread but I thought there's enough of us watching to merit its own thread.

Every episode I watch I am continually impressed with the writing and structure . . the storylines weave in and out seamlessly. Benton crying over the young man with Aids but really mourning his mother - brilliant. Carter finding out Benton's review and almost immediately rising up to his expectations and being an inspiration to the young cancer sufferer.
The way is now clear for Doug and Carol.
I keep remembering snippets of stories to come . . . the collapsing floors, Abbie, Romano and the helicopter . . .
I wonder if they'll air all 300 odd programmes?

I couldn't agree more. For such a long-running series it kept up the standard too which is a great achievement.
I saw Maura Tierney (Abby) in Electric Dreams the other night, older now of course and very thin. Jullianna Margulies is the same. I suppose it's the pressure of the industry but I do wish they could be made to understand that being extremely thin isn't attractive. Not just in the US, though – Lesley Sharpe and Suranne Jones in Scott and Bailey come to mind.
I'm also looking forward to all the series arcs and hope we see the lot. I'm realising how much I dislike Jen, who is being held up as a banner for feminism but is coming across as selfish. What did she think Mark was going to do once he was qualified? Never mind, it means Mark gets to end up with Alex Kingston.
The gradual reuniting of Doug and Carol is beautifully done, with few words but wistful glances from both of them. I don't remember how long they stay before Doug goes off to – where was it – Seattle? Somewhere very far away, as I remember.

I had never seen the (non) wedding episode which I think was the final one in the first series. Julianna Margulies looked absolutely stunning in her wedding dress, which must have cost a fortune. As you said Lara, the way is now clear for Doug, though I think they have a few hurdles to overcome yet.
I don't remember what happens with Chloe's baby. She's hardly a fit mother but Susan can't possibly take over long term, surely?
I never worked out the doctors' uniform code. Mark spent the whole of the first series as a resident in scrubs, now he's an attending he's added a white coat but the scrubs are still there. But Doug who is a paediatric resident wears a white coat over his own clothes (and a tie!), as do the female residents. All students wear white coats. Surgeons are in blue scrubs whether they are in surgery or not. So Carter has gone from a white coat to blue scrubs. They wander around in corridors, up and down stairs, even to and from work in their scrubs. Infection control would have a field day. Then there's their hair ... Yes, I know, it's television. I did notice though that Benton's earring disappears when he's working and reappears when he's not in uniform.

Not sure they had any infection control in the Eighties!
