England game -
After you. No, no, after you. No, I must insist. Ok then, but I do need to kick you to get a yellow card. I'd rather you didn't, old chap.... ouch!

I am not sure about this "best to finish 2nd" idea. Since so many teams seem to be aware of it - and make use of it - why not wait until all 16 finalists have been decided, and then do another 'draw' for the next stage? How long does it take to draw names out a hat? 5 minutes?
10 if you want to make a TV spectacle of it.
The last 15 minutes of the Japan match were like an over-70s walking game No one was doing ANYTHING.
This needs to be looked in to.

Well, strikers instinct kicked in for Belgium so....
I think you're right though, Bidie, there should be a draw after the games. But I guess the logistics of where people will play and ticket sales might be why not.
Oooh! Nice miss Rashford!

When they are down to 16 teams, is the range of stadiums used not limited to just 2 or 3? So location need not be a problem. I know they need lots for the group rounds with so many matches taking place, but latterly I think they could cut it down.
I would also like to see any penalty shoot outs taken by the MANAGERS.
Or even better, the country Mascots.

That's true about the stadia.
And it would make it more interestig to not know who you would get for the first knockout game.

I think they did very well at throwing that game. Didn't make it too obvious, had a few attempts at the goal making carefully sure they missed. I expect Gareth is very pleased with them.

Yes, it is a matter of what you have to do to qualify. It is down to the way the competition is set up. I have less of a problem with what they did than with what bigger teams have done.

A great song from the late Kirsty MacColl which is hopefully relevant for Tuesday....

I love the way the average man in the street, interviewed on tv, now knows that losing is an easier way to proceed.
Proves the point say something often enough ,you can convince anyone it is true.

But, in this case, comparing the two halves of the draw, from now on, you will see that on the face of it, it is true. Fifa rankings are in brackets.
One half of the draw:
Uruguay (14) Portugal (4) France (7) Argentina (5) Brazil (2) Mexico (15) Belgium (3) Japan (61)
The other half:
Spain (10) Russia (70) Croatia (20) Denmark (12=) Sweden (24) Switzerland (6) Columbia (16) England (12=)
Which half would you rather be in? The form teams (apart from Switzerland) are all in one half. Of course, what happened to Germany (1) and Poland (8) demonstrates that form coming into a tournament isn't a guarantee of anything, but it is indicative, when you look at the top half of the draw from now on.
