Channel 4 have started to show the 'coming soon' trailer for Catch 22, which is due to air in the Spring.
It'll star: George Clooney as Scheisskopf Hugh Laurie as Major de Coverley Christopher Abbott as John Yossarian Kyle Chandler as Colonel Cathcart Daniel David Stewart as Milo Austin Stowell as Nately Rafi Gavron as Aarfy Gerran Howell as Kid Sampson Lewis Pullman as Major Major Tessa Ferrer as Nurse Duckett Jay Paulson as The Chaplain
“Catch 22 is the story of the incomparable, artful dodger, Yossarian (Christopher Abbott), a US Air Force bombardier in World War II who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. “But his real problem is not the enemy, but rather his own army which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. “Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to avoid his military assignments, he’ll be in violation of Catch-22, a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule which specifies that a concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers which are real and immediate is the process of a rational mind; a man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but a request to be removed from duty is evidence of sanity and therefore makes him ineligible to be relieved from duty.”

A book I've started many times, but never actually finished! What I have read though, has been very enjoyable. Perhaps I'll be able to get into the series a bit better. Looking forward to trying anyway.

I read it when I was at college and can still remember parts of it, I shall give this a try.

Goodness, can't remember when this came out as a book, but we all loved it at the time.

Did anyone watch it? Lots of tweets about the sound issues.

I guess just me then? I quite enjoyed it. George Clooney got the maniac officer at the training camp right. But the rest of it didn't really have the feel of the book. And I don't think Yoyo is well cast either. Although it has been a long time since I read it.

Just got this watched - excellent. Have not read the book but loved the high production values and the great cast.
Black comedy at its finest.

Ok - catching up with this excellent drama/black comedy.
Lovely to see that Lt George* - of Blackadder 4 - survived WW1 and is now high up in the ranks for WW2.
Wonderful sets, great acting and heart in the mouth drama of war. The sheer horror - and lunacy - of it all.
(*Hugh Laurie - Lt George in Blackadder 4 and now a Major in this)

I'm watching it but I can't say I find it all that good. I don't like Yossarian much. I think the combat scenes have been effective but I don't find it as involving as the book. Or Mash!

Just caught the final episode and thoroughly enjoyed the whole series. The last scenes were so moving.
Must read the book sometime.

I really didnt take to this and mainly stuck with it because of the book which I read decades ago. I thought the last episode was good though.

Didn't read the book, but my friends were raving about it in the 1960s so I was quite a bit familiar with it by proxy. It was ground-breaking I suppose to a generation who for most of their lives had been subjected to a cinema depiction of the Allies, almost to a man, as totally dedicated anti-Nazi heroes.
I thought in the finale Yossarian had finally demonstrated he'd gone completely doolally (possibly by design) without claiming so, and would therefore avoid catch 22 and get shipped home. The senior officers were all awful - vindictive, obsessed, stupid, naive, you name it - which presumably was one of the book's themes. The scenes of the bombers flying through flak in every single episode (maybe the same scene?) were totally overdone - I got the message the first time.
I didn't really take to this TV series. I've seen quite a lot of WW2-based films and TV series in recent years - some from Europe, Australia and Japan - most of which have affected me more than this production. There's talk of a second series, which would go beyond the book - I doubt I'll bother.
