Sanditon tells the story of the joyously impulsive, spirited and unconventional Charlotte Heywood and her spiky relationship with the humorous, charming Sidney Parker.
When a chance accident transports her from her rural hometown of Willingden to the would-be coastal resort of the eponymous title, it exposes Charlotte to the intrigues and dalliances of a seaside town on the make, and the characters whose fortunes depend on its commercial success.
The twists and turns of the plot, which takes viewers from the West Indies to the rotting alleys of London, exposes the hidden agendas of each character and sees Charlotte discover herself and ultimately find love.
The drama series, which is based on Jane Austen’s unfinished novel that was written only months before her death in 1817, stars Rose Williams, Theo James, Anne Reid, Kris Marshall, Kate Ashfield, Jack Fox, Charlotte Spencer, Lily Sacofsky, Crystal Clarke, Elizabeth Berrington, Adrian Rawlins, Turlough Convery, Mark Stanley, Matthew Needham, Alexandra Roach, Leo Suter, Kevin Eldon and Adrian Scarborough.
It was adapted for television by Andrew Davies, with PBS’ Masterpiece co-producing for the US market.

This should be interesting. Andrew Davies did such a good job of Pride and Prejudice and Moll Flanders but I do wish he'd stop inventing scenes that the author didn't write, and I imagine there's scope for a lot of that in this unfinished novel.

Been reading this BBC article - "Sex, nudity and slavery in Jane Austen TV drama": www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-49131065Anne Reid says "I suspect the purists will hate it but we're in the entertainment business" - which means I'll probably like it.

Austen only wrote 11 chapters. I think she usually wrote about 50 chapters. So she had barely begun to flesh out her characters If we'd even met them all. What was written gave little hint of a hugely romantic story and indeed this may have been more of a story about the rise of the middle classes. Some have suggested it may have been a story more akin to Gaskill; a type of Middlemarch by the sea. Austen did experiment with styles but never wrote beyond her knowledge. Her characters never went to court, only married one step above themselves, there was no politics and definitely no sex.
Now if this was the first 11 chapters of an unfinished Anne Bronte well.... who knows.
It's cheap easy writing trumped up as Austen who was full of class and manners on a small scale.

The book I read was called Sanditon by Jane Austen and Another Lady. I cant remember the name of said lady who completed it. I assume they have based the series on this, rather than making it up completely. The promos have a lot of pop music in them. Will this be a feature of the show I wonder.

I’ve a funny feeling that I have read this. It was while I was going through chemo and so everything that happened that year is all a bit fuzzy. Can’t remember what happened so will be coming to it as new.

I went off Anne Reid when she did WDYTYA. Haven't changed my mind.
Why not just write something original or base it on a book that includes all of this (sex, slavery, and nudity) and already exists. Instead of putting together some cobblers pretending to be Austen. So much seems to be a re-working of something else -even films are sequels and prequels and pre-prequels and spin offs. There are some brilliant authors out there, why not commission something new.
I think it is high time somebody took hold of Forever Amber if they want a sexy period romp full of high jinks and pathos. Amber is much more your woman for a threesome behind the bike shed than anything Austen ever wrote.

It clashes with The Handmaid's Tale. Typical. I won't be at home so will have to record both of them, though tbh I would probably do that anyway as they are both commercial channels.

I loved Forever Amber!!!! Read it decades ago. I think at the time it was the fruitiest book I had ever read.
Re Sanditon, I got the impression from an article in a TV guide that the drama does not follow the published book completed by Another Lady. Andrew Davies has imagined his own ending, well middle and ending.
