It made me laugh out loud last night when Charlotte was asked if she had seen anything impressive on the beach! I am rather enjoying it. - and then when Charlotte seemed to be struggling with the answer, the word "shellwise" had to be added to make the question more specific!
I'm enjoying it too.

Another good episode. Some jokes woven into it, and the Lady Denham character just gets better and better.

Also enjoying it but not sure about Charlotte's quirky facial expressions , in a recent episode I felt she was ovedoing it but last night's episode was better. LadyDenham has a very grand house ,I love seeing those old mansion houses

I enjoy it to a point, but I have to say my dislike of Charlotte grows every week. And now she’s going haring of to London with no escort, plan or money and my suspension of disbelief is being sorely tested.

I have to say about 80% of my interest is in the House of Incest rather than the rest of it. I think Esther steals every scene she is in and I would quite happily have watched a "gothic novel" type of drama about those two. I do hope she changes her mind about Lord Babington who seems a good egg because you can bet your life slimey Edward would dump her for a suitable heiress. Is he played by Laurence Fox's brother?
So was Otis a wrong'un after all then? That's a shame, he seemed rather nice.
I don't particularly dislike Charlotte but am not that bothered about her.

I am mystified about one thing - how long is it acceptable to stay in a strangers house, eat their food, etc (because she is not actually a friend of the family is she, they were strangers she just happened to meet one day). Isn’t her own family wondering where she has got to? At what point does she overstay her welcome?

I think that is quite a Jane Austen thing though. Young ladies do go and stay with other families for weeks on end. I assume they were supposed to be generally helpful to earn their keep, and also look to improve their marriage prospects. But I also assume they would usually know the family before descending!

“House of Incest” 😀😀 Yes, they hold my interest, too. I’m coming to feel sorry for her (is she called Esther? I get confused), as Edward is obviously pulling her strings and he strikes me as quite horrible. Lord Babington seems a much kinder prospect.
I think Otis must be a wrong’un. Otherwise, Sidney’s disapproval would be down to racism, and I don’t think that’s the case.

I hope Lady Denham is ok. She's quite my favourite character. Can't stand Kris Marshalls character.

I assume they were supposed to be generally helpful to earn their keep, and also look to improve their marriage prospects. But I also assume they would usually know the family before descending! When they did this it was usually with family or distant family, but always some connection e.g. the friend of the niece etc. and it would be acceptable to stay for a several weeks even a season, unless other engagements got in the way. Travelling alone was extremely rare, people even hired companions to travel with them and at the very least some matron from the locality would be nominated. Even young single women travelling together as a twosome or in a group was not the done thing. Shorter journeys in the family carriage e.g. half a day to a days travel might be ok, but any longer was not and only then if you had your own staff escorting you. Train travel really freed women up but even then companions could be hired via agencies for long trips. This doesn't change for decades and not really until public transport was well established. Of course women did travel alone if they had to and we see that in other novels but it was considered perilous and a danger to your reputation. Poor women walked and walked and walked.

I lost all sympathy for him when he bought that expensive necklace for his wife despite the financial problems besetting the project. That seemed mad to me, especially he was badgering Sydney to get more money for bloody Sanditon (I can't stand the way he says that word, rather in a tone of adoration/awe). He seemed quite an amiable cove at the beginning but I have him marked down as feckless now.

I’ve given up on this I found it slow and didn’t find any of the characters likeable. Might watch the last episode, whenever that is just to see how it progresses.

I haven't watched the last two episodes because it just wasn't engaging me so I couldn't be bothered to put down the book I was reading in favour of switching it on. I keep lurking here though to see what you are all thinking of it.
