If that's what they're doing, it's harking back to an earlier, character driven form of cop show, isn't it – Starsky & Hutch, Macmillan and Wife, The Rockford Files with Rockford and his father, Cagney and Lacey, etc. I'm struggling to think of UK equivalents from that era, though later ones such as Grantchester and Foyle's War come to mind. ....Randall and Hopkirk was a British example.....although Hopkirk was a ghost....

Looking forward to this as the cast is good - Jason is a wonderful actor - but best of all the lovely city of Bath is the star! Fingers crossed the plot is decent.

Are they based on crime novels?

Are they based on crime novels? Don't think so - billed as a new series created & written by DCI Banks writer Robert Murphy.

The DCI Banks series is good. Based on books, but sometimes the characters have new stories written for them.

Bumping this up so you all remember to give it a try. More Midsommer than Endeavour it does sound promising.

Am recording this as it clashes with Last Tango ...

Enjoying it so far but the use of the word "sh*t" - several times pre-watershed - jars.
I know it is a mild swear word these days and children hear worse in the playground.
But Midsummer, Morse, Endeavour, Frost, DCI Banks etc all manage to tell a story with no need for even the mildest profanity.
On the plus side, Bath looks stunning.

Enjoying it! Jason Watkins is a brilliant actor. The characters are all finding their feet a bit in this first episode, but I will definitely keep watching. And yes, Bath is lovely!

The main characters are great - not just the mis-matched title characters but the over all boss and the two other detectives as well. It is nicely paced and draws you in but, in this instance, the plot was completely bonkers and just did not work, imo. Still very enjoyable and I will certainly be watching next week. But better - more believable - plots please! "Where is DS Dodds?" "At the library ma'am" "Why is he there?" "Why is he ANYWHERE ma'am?"

I really enjoyed it. The plot did rather collapse but it was very good Sunday evening fare I thought.

I enjoyed it too Only one more episode? Might need more than that for people to get used to it, but I'll watch again next week

I liked it, too. Even though the plot was ridiculous. A bit Columbo-esque.

Well, I seem to be in a minority of one as I didn't like this at all. I agree Jason Watkins is a terrific actor, equally at home in comedy and drama (Being Human and The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies come to mind). Bath is also very beautiful and it's good to see it without period costume!
But the story was ludicrous – King Lear meets Death in Paradise – and I thought Tala Gouveia, whose work I don't know, was trying too hard in a situation that struggled to be funny. There's only one more episode so I will give it another go, but am not impressed so far.
