The Rugby World Cup starts next Friday in Japan with the host nation playing Russia. Teams have already been arriving in the country, just as Typhoon Faxai was leaving, to Team Welcome Ceremonies which are being held across Japan from 13-19 September. The ceremonies will be an opportunity for the local communities, the Japan Rugby Football Union, Japan Rugby 2019 and World Rugby to officially welcome all teams to Japan and to Rugby World Cup 2019. The ceremonies will take place in iconic locations spread across Japan, from the northern island of Hokkaido to the tropical island paradise of Okinawa, more than 2,600km to the south. The new version of World in Union has been released: (The video might have to be played on YouTube to work) Here's the first round Schedule: Rugby World Cup Matches

Hmm.... It's not my favourite sports song but that version isn't bad. Expect the BBC will use chorus at the end as the first one is too slow and calm.

The singer seems to be their 'go to' singer for this sort of thing. She was the singer of the 2012 Japanese Olympic Games song, but, she has never sung in English before. Here she is introducing the mascots:

What are ITV doing? They are not using the new World in Union, they are using one of the worst versions. It sounds like it is the 2015 British version by Paloma Faith.

The version sung in English by the Japanese schoolchildren in the opening cermony was seriously good; much better than the version ITV are using. People are complaining that they are not singing in Japanese; they are missing the point that the organisers want to be inclusive and welcoming.

Marnus Labuschagné -- remember him from the Ashes series? -- has a brother who is playing in the Rugby World Cup. for Japan. He qualifies by residency.

The ITV World in Union singer is actually Emeli Sandé. I am still disappointed at this choice, and I am disappointed at the whole way that they are doing this from the studio layout to the experts they use.

ITV have never been good at showing live sport. It's why they usually get spanked by the BBC when showing the World Cup.
I watched the game and really enjoyed it. Neither team technically the best but really up for it. It was good fun.
Just watching the Opening Ceremony now.
