Apple TV+ Apple TV+ Coming 1 NovemberIt is really too much now. "If you have an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV, you already have the Apple TV app — the ultimate way to watch Apple TV+. And this autumn, we’re bringing the Apple TV experience to popular smart TVs, streaming boxes and streaming sticks" ... at yet another monthly cost to add to your probably already overburdened entertainment bill.

Not one I shall be bothering with. I think a few streaming services will fold as the market is getting a bit saturated.

Either that or the poorer ones will be bought up -- as is already happening in the US -- with back catalogues being the primary goal.

That's more likely. Netflix have quite a lot of the BBC's back catalogue from the 80s onwards.

I just can't be bothered with all this new stuff and am happy to stay with the simple straightforward stuff even considering giving up the internet so I can live the remaining years in peace, have already given up my delivered daily paper but do force myself to watch TV news, sometimes even just the headlines

I only buy newspapers when we need something to cover the floor. Either that or collect a bunch of free ones. We use one streaming service, and that is it. No satellite, no cable, nothing. I do recommend dividing services between family and friends, though. It can save a lot of money.

Fiona, I gave up watching the news years ago and feel happier for it. I only recently started watching stuff about Brexit as I feel it's important to know at the moment. But I shall give up watching political once that's done. Unless we end up with a dictatorship, obviously, when social media will be more important then state news.
But honestly, if you gave up the news you wouldn't be missing much.

Me too actually. I have a lot of old Radio Times (my mum took it, I use the online version) but they're not as absorbent as newspaper and not as good for cleaning windows.

I read this as " I use the online version, but they're not as absorbent as newspaper and not as good for cleaning windows." I wondered what you were talking about; of course they're not.

These streaming services may have offered 'choice' when they were first introduced... access to old programmes and series... but they're now making television more of a luxury, rather than a regular cheap means of entertainment. It has a knock-on effect.
The BBC has announced that its red button service is being dropped from early next year. Due, obviously, to cost. It can't afford such a frivolous waste of money in the light of serious competion from Netflix, Amazon, Apple, uncle Tom Cobbley and all.
I don't need broadband at home. Consequently I don't have any of these over-expensive television services. How long Freeview will last in competition with them is anyone's guess.

Very true Bob.
I don't have broadband, so any access to the internet has to be via my phone. I'll certainly miss the TEXT bit of it - for news and sport.

Yes, it was always convenient. It meant that you didn't have to crank up the computer to get at the headlines. More recently, I felt that it was becoming an interesting curiosity, a bit like early internet services like Compuserve.
