They train in a busy gym and all competitions are the same. So I guess they learn how to block out all the other stuff. Whereas golfers tend to train alone and get very serious about knocking a small ball in a hole.  |

I wish the commentators wouldn't keep handing the gold to America on the first rotation. Yes, they are favourites but it's bloody disrespectful to everyone else and boring to listen to.
This is one of the reasons I was pleased when I thought Biles had retired. Cos otherwise all we get is Biles this Biles that, Biles Biles Biles. Matt must have sore lips the amount of arse-kissing he does.

This is turning into a really good men's competition. We've done a weak piece and a strong piece and we're in 4th so it's looking fairly good for a bronze.

I delay the start so I can FF through repeats and changeovers. That may be why they didn't annoy me too much yesterday by bigging up just the US Team. I thought they were quite even handed but I may have missed a lot of it. I thought Biles was good, but did like another US gymnast whose name I can't now remember. Something like Sesuma Li? Matt also did pick out the Italians as being worth our attention, TBF. And of course the live coverage was selected by the host broadcaster. Shame the BBC didn't have a camera in there so we could see a bit more of our lot. They have done that at The Olympics before haven't they?
I just have to do the washing up then I am ready for the Men's! I hope they don't show much of the Rings, they make me feel a bit sick! I shall be manning the remote when they are on.

I agree that I may be overly-sensitive to the mere mention of her as it's now like having a pin stuck in me. Especially when I'm not expecting it cos they are showing someone else and still mention her, like they did with the beam yesterday. LOL! It's built up over the years until now I'm at the stage of giving up watching the women altogether.
Really enjoying the men's though. And the BBC have got their own cameraman in there but they are showing our boys after each rotation so don't FFD too quick!

Now, Chinese Taipei?? I don't think I've ever seen a gymnast from there let alone a team! Is this Taiwan by another name? And they got in ahead of the likes of Netherlands, France and Germany? Israel and Greece have strong male gymnasts too IIRC.
Going off to watch it now!

It is Taiwan. The Chinese government have put a lot of money and resources into their programme in the last few years so they have really improved.

Just finished! Very good show. I liked some of the younger guys too, particularly from Russia, as well as the old hands. Second time in a row I have seen Max come off the horse though. There was definitely more catch up on our team from that ground level camera than anything I saw yesterday. Do you think they realised we didn't see much of our girls the day before? Did they send a runner down with his iPhone to follow our lot round? One thing I don't understand though. In the scoring, some people get a penalty and some just get their score reduced by whatever. So yesterday they went down like ninepins but a penalty wasnt necessarily shown in the scoring box as a separate item. Surely if you fall off the beam or the bars it should be shown as it's a fixed deduction isn't it? Unlike say messing up your vault landing. |

I didn't really notice TBH. I didn't watch a lot of the beam and I'm so used to them falling off I didn't look at how it affected the scoring.

I was a bit annoyed at our boys though. The only reason America beat us is that 3 of ours fell off and none of theirs did. For actual skills and performance, we did score more.
