It has gone in a completely different direction from the books - where Sidney has a number of curates, you never hear what happens to Leonard, and Sidney and Amanda are only friends (though she does solve crimes with him). In the books he marries the German lady from the first series and has a daughter with her. They are always shown as a devoted couple. Given that this is the 50s and 60s he can't keep his job and Amanda, so it will have to be either or. That sounds like a much better way for them to have gone. I wonder what made them change it. Presumably to make it more "edgy" and "exciting " - I don't remember Geordie's home life being mentioned much either.

Was that the last one, it was building nicely and then wallop Sidney walks off leaving Leonard and the housekeeper weeping together.

I think there are two more to go. Presumably the long dark night of the soul will feature!

There's definitely an episode next week cause I thought it was the end too so checked on the EPG. Poor Leonard, I'm getting more into his story and Daniel is back.

Leonard acted so well. I went from total sympathy to outrage, when he called sex with his fiancée disgusting, and back again! Poor Miss Franklin too, I thought, she didn't ask to be put in that position! Squirmsville when Daniel walked in! I thought he had gone away, so why aren't they still together? ?

I can't have been paying proper attention - probably being ever angrier with Sidney - I didn't see Daniel come back....
Oh drat, I'll have to watch the end again

Poor Miss Franklin too, I thought, she didn't ask to be put in that position! Squirmsville when Daniel walked in! I thought he had gone away, so why aren't they still together? ? When Leonard said "It's disgusting. It's not right." I thought it could be aimed at his fiancée but I read it that he was talking about his own sexuality, that that's how he feels about himself, his own internalised homophobia, that he's disgusting and not right. He still shouldn't have said it to her and she's done nothing wrong, I did feel for her when he said it as she had no idea, it was a complete shock. I wonder if she'll find out the real reason why he can't marry her. And if so would he want to keep his secret to protect her from an embarrassment or would she shout it from the rooftops as revenge and to get Leonard in trouble with the police. Could Geordie or that new sergeant end up arresting him? I'm finding his storyline so interesting, especially watching it from 2017 where his storyline seems so out of date to how things are today. I'm looking forward to next week

That's how I read it too. I can't see Miss Franklin telling anyone, she probably feels it's her own fault somehow. I'm a lot more sympathetic to those two at the moment than to Sidney and Amanda. I thought the scene with the bishop (is he a bishop? not sure) was very well played. It's an impossible scenario for all three male main characters. And as for that slimy sergeant, I hope something nasty happens to him!

He's an archdeacon, which I gather is one rung below a bishop.
Yes, though he seemed to be having a change of heart by the end, when he gave Geordie the information about the motorbike and them being seen at the pub on the fateful night. I think he went along with the masonic superintendent to advance his career, but failing to pursue guilty men was a step too far.

Is this the last series? It just seemed like the ultimatum that Amanda gave him looked like he might choose her and that would end the series. I wish we'd seen more of Leonard, last week he tried to kill himself and the photographer came back and none of that was mentioned this week and a bit more of the Geordie background. How did his wife find out about his affair? Did I miss that?

The newly-promoted sergeant Phil told her at the police ball in last week's episode, out of spite apparently because Geordie had had a go at him over the case. (Well he didn't tell her in so many words, but he made it very clear Geordie was having an affair, and who with.)

Thanks geomantry, it does ring a bell now. I'm just surprised it took til this week for it to come to a head.

Just knew Mrs Maguire would split her money with the other Mrs Maguire. I could seriously weep for poor Leonard.

That was the ideal solution, and quite a touching (if brief) scene, but handled in the down-to-earth way this series does well imo. A grand gesture from "our" Mrs. Maguire, who would have liked children of her own.
