The books are in the cosy genre, don’t know about the series but I suspect cosy. Yes, it's cosy not gory, and the main characters are likeable I think.

I watched WP yesterday and the first one was a little meh but the second one was much better. I think mostly because the detective's character was filled out more and he wasn't just a maverick grump with family problems.

What ever you do, don't watch The Aurora Teagarden Mysteries. Absolutely awful. One of the worst things I've wasted 20 mins on in my life. It's fan-fiction that someone paid to make. I wish I could meet them, they must be very rich and have no clue to what a good idea looks like. The MC is a total Mary Sue, the dialogue is Mystery Writing Lesson 1 and the acting! Lordy me.

Whitstable Pearl I don't have Acorn myself (yet) but I did get to watch and enjoy the first 2 episodes of this new series, based on books by Julie Wassmer and made by the same production company as Marcella. Kerry Godliman plays Pearl, Frances Barber her mother and Howard Charles (Porthos in The Musketeers) DCI McGuire. Other familiar names can be seen guesting, e.g. Cathy Tyson. Episodes released "linearly" on Mondays and I'll be trying to take in some more. Pearl runs a seafood restaurant but is no stranger to detective work, and after an initial dust-up with real detective McGuire he starts to need her extensive local knowledge in his investigations. Of course they are both single... I have just read the first book in this series, and really enjoyed it. Nice characterisation I thought, although after seeing the trailer I was surprised to read that Pearl is tall, olive skinned with black hair. I’ve ordered the second one.

I've managed to watch it all now and found it very enjoyable. Hope there's a second series. Yes, the exact opposite of Kerry! The casting director must have had his reasons.

Whitstable Pearl: Second series confirmed by Acorn.
"Season two will see celebrity chef Nolan prioritize her detective work and transition from being a chef who solves crimes to a full time investigator who just happens to own a restaurant.
Production will begin on the second six-part series in Whitstable, UK in February"

I've started watching and enjoying S2. So while still professional partners they each have new life partners - wonder if it will stay like that?

It feels like they deliberately missed out a whole story line but it does work!
