Traces will premiere on BBC One on Monday January 4th at 9pm.
Traces explores the world of the Scottish Institute of Forensic Science and follows Emma Hedges, Professor Sarah Gordon and Professor Kathy Torrance – who together will use the rigors of forensics to uncover the truth about an unsolved murder case. When 23-year-old Emma Hedges returns to Scotland to take up a new position as a lab assistant at SIFA, she signs up to a MOOC – Massive Online Open Course – which teaches the principles of forensic science.
But she soon discovers that the fictitious case study has a strikingly similar and shocking link to her past. As Emma’s sleuthing takes her into darker corners and unpicks more and more secrets, it becomes clear that she should trust no-one. It will be Sarah and Kathy’s exacting minds that reward Emma’s faith in the science that has fuelled her imagination and who will ultimately bring a killer to justice. The drama series, which is based on an idea by best-selling crime writer Val McDermid, stars Molly Windsor, Laura Fraser, Jennifer Spence, Martin Compston, Laurie Brett, Vincent Regan, Michael Nardone and John Gordan Sinclair.
The UKTV original series previously aired in the UK on Alibi.
Alibi have ordered a second series.

I thought it sounded familiar! Is it very gory and dark, G-man?

Looking forward to this! Good Scottish cast and some dire doings. Just the thing for a dark January evening.

I thought it sounded familiar! Is it very gory and dark, G-man? There are two main cases - a historical one involving members of Emma's own family, which does have some dark secrets, and a present day one centred on a fatal fire at a nightclub. Both have details which I'd say are gruesome rather than gory.

I also watched it first time around. I recall I wasn’t overly impressed with the heroine of this particular story, but I liked the team and enjoyed the story.

Did anyone watch this last night. Set in Dundee it features a new junior forensic scientist who is told to take the course for her job and discovers that the case history is that of her murdered mother.
Didn't mind it and will watch the next episode to see how it fairs.

The Guardian TV review didn't like it: www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2021/jan/04/traces-review-bbcHaven't watched yet but am looking forward to it and keeping an open mind! I often enjoy things reviewers, who I sometimes think have quotas to meet, do not. It will be refreshing to see a Scottish drama that isn't set in Edinburgh or Glasgow or 'The Highlands' which could be anywhere and often is!

I have to agree with this on all counts; I liked it when it was first on. I lived in Dundee, just off Albert Street near the Baxter Park, for a few years in the 1990s.

I've added Dundee to my list of Places to Go in the who knows when time when we can I got a bit confused in the first episode and wil probably have to watch again, but I found it sufficiently intriguing to want to see how it progresses
