I don't trust that builder at all.
I'm going to binge the next one or two so anything else will be in spoilers.

I forgot to say that a lot of it was filmed in Manchester.

{SPOILER:Click to Show}I have now binged the whole lot and loved it! Unusually it wasn't the murder or murderer that was interesting, it was all the relationships around that. But I think that's normal for a McDermid story as I've read a couple of her novels and they were the same. I did actually work out the who, why and how quite early on but it still kept me watching.

Is season two a different story do we know? Or a continuation of this one?

I would imagine that it's a different story but with developments of the main characters relationships, especially with her fathers.

I assumed that the main character from this season would fade back into the team and the focus would be on a new case.

I've watched two episodes so far. I don't know Dundee therefore can't tell what was filmed there and what wasn't, but I imagine the aerial shots are Dundee and the interiors and side streets probably are somewhere closer to the production centre. I've only been there once, years ago for an interview, and thought it was the coldest place on earth. (At that point I hadn't been to Aberdeen!) So it's nice to see people outside in shirt sleeves.
I'm finding the relationships difficult to work out at the moment after two episodes – John Gordon Sinclair is Emma's biological father. Her mother, now dead, is the person whose murder has possibly been used as the basis for the online course. Do we know who her stepfather is – is he part of the story, or not, if her mother remarried and went to live in England? Perhaps he'll show up later as yet another suspect. And the woman in hospital is her friend's mother and a conspiracy theorist who I imagine will turn out either to be right or to be the murderer. (No, I haven't seen any further ahead.)
I also continue to be intrigued that Martin Compston, nice though he is, is considered such a babe magnet in TV drama. His Line of Duty character was the same – what is it that makes him so irresistible?
Nice to see Frances Grey playing a right old cow – we don't see enough of her. And lots of other Scottish stalwarts who have the good sense not to pretend to be Dundonian, which is one of the harder accents to master. Neve McIntosh hasn't had much to do yet, I hope we see more of her.

Emma's stepfather is Jimmy. He will feature quite heavily later. And Emma went to England with her aunt, not her mother.

Right. I had to look Jimmy up and I remember we've seen him briefly so far. The actor is Scottish, so I guess Emma's parents were divorced and she married Jimmy, then Emma went to live with her aunt after her mother's death.
These plot details can play out over many pages in a novel but it's harder on screen! Though I think this was written for TV.

I've just watched the first four episodes, and I'm enjoying it. Nice to see several women in STEM roles, and I like how supportive and encouraging Laura Fraser's character is. Off to watch the last two episodes on the iPlayer now. 🙂
