The Labour MP on the Bradford side was clueless. Did she contribute to a single answer? She may have relayed some correct answers from the prof to the captain but that was about the sum of her efforts. Yep. She was very poor.

Has it been my imagination or have all the teams of alumni this year taken the whole thing more seriously than used to be the case? There didn't seem to be the Christmassy atmosphere with the joking and laughter that we used to get and even Miles Jupp hardly cracked a smile. They all seemed better than previous teams at answering quite hard questions too I thought.

Perhaps that had something to do with the perspex screens between them and having to be kept separate off screen. There would be no opportunity to sit and chat.
They were all struggling to hear each other.

Both teams very impressive. Both deserve to go further in the competition.

Since when have we had 84 quarter-finals? Seems to be longer every year.

Since when have we had 84 quarter-finals? Seems to be longer every year. And with each round the questions seem to get more specialised and incomprehensible - well, to me they do. There seem to be more and more complicated science and maths questions and I don't find the programme as much fun as I used to when I was in with a chance of at least attempting to answer a reasonable percentage of questions, even if I was wrong. These days I find it hard sometimes to know what on earth they are talking about. I am full of admiration for the breadth of knowledge these young people have but given that this is a prime time television quiz I do think they ought to make the questions a bit more the kind of thing that the normal, reasonably well-educated and informed viewer has some chance of answering!

I am full of admiration for the breadth of knowledge these young people have but given that this is a prime time television quiz I do think they ought to make the questions a bit more the kind of thing that the normal, reasonably well-educated and informed viewer has some chance of answering! The Producer has said that there is an equal balance of questions and that the live audience can corroborate that, but we can't have a situation on TV where the teams go five or six Starters for Ten without a single correct answer or indeed nobody even ringing the buzzer. They (the BBC) have stated the quiz is about excellence and showing this would not suit the format. Now I've heard this before as an excuse and even Paxman has said there are more questions we don't see. I am presuming that the only questions they can cut are the ones that don't affect the score and simply weren't answered correctly or nobody answered. Perhaps these are all the English, History and Geography ones. As we never ever see any outtakes how would we know. The questions are supposed to be degree level questions, not Masters or PhD questions but I find that they are incomprehensible to most of us who are not studying particle physics and where we would have previously expected a few of science questions beyond our ken, it shouldn't be all of them every time, especially when they can't even answer questions on where the Lake District is?? TV quizzes only work when the audience is keen to have a go from their sofa otherwise we lose interest. There has to be an element of audience anticipation and engagement. There are far too many PhD students on the show for a start and I think that knowing this the question setters pitch higher than degree level on many occasions. I think it is stultifying boring watching clever people just be clever. It's just not good TV. We need to be able to shout "The Mill on the Floss", even if it turns out to be "Silas Marner", otherwise they could do it without us.

I was really hoping Birmingham would put them out but not quick enough on the buzzer. Oh well, I shall just not watch the one's that annoying tit is in until he's gone.

All I can think of are Mastermind and Would I Lie to You. Of course. I forgot about WILTY. That beacon is still shining thank goodness. Thin pickings for my £159 a year methinks.
