Back to the teams again and Royal Holloway were excellent against St Andrews. Steady and no quirks to distract viewers. Unlike their opponents who had enough quirks for both teams. They were seriously annoying me so I'm glad we won't see them again.

Unusual to have a draw at the end tonight's round (16.1.23). The starter question that decided it was based on a minority sport played almost universally by women. The all female team answered it more or less straightaway. All credit to them but I was left wondering...........

Yep, I noticed that but it could have been any question and they got it right. Netball is regularly on the TV and the GB Team is high up there, so plenty of coverage in the press this last year. I got it right too, not because I love netball, mostly because I hated it and it therefore stuck in my mind. Goal Defence was such as useless position - actually they all are.

It did seem an odd question to settle the contest however.

I am sorry about the winners last night. They annoyed me with their time wasting deliberations and I got the impression they were annoying Paxman as well. He was getting very terse with them as it went on. They are good though. Semi-final next!

I wondered how Jeremy Paxman would handle signing off from his last ever University Challenge as I couldn't imagine him getting the least bit emotional over it. On the other hand, surely it had to be acknowledged. In the event I thought he managed it perfectly: understated but to the point. I can't imagine the programme without him. Goodbye Jeremy, it is the end of an era and I for one will miss you. EDIT TO SAY: Congratulations to the series winners by the way. It was a good contest.

I had give up on this series near the start but I think I will watch this one. Any news on the replacement yet?

I had give up on this series near the start but I think I will watch this one. Any news on the replacement yet? Amol Rajan is to be the replacement. I'm not sure how I will take to him in the job as he has such a different personality from Paxman and I do find him hard to follow at times due to his tendency to speak very quickly and swallow his consonants. I may be surprised though.

Not familiar with him as I don't watch the news. We will see.

He is one of the presenters of the Today programme on R4 but he pops on TV too from time to time. His diction is not good but he does tone it up or down according to who he is interviewing.

Just watched the final and I also think Paxo did it well. Acknowledged it was his last one without making it about him.

They were discussing the differing styles between Paxman and Rajan and someone pointed out that Gascoyne and Paxman were completely different personalities. So we'll see. Perhaps he'll crack down on allowing Oxbridge to dither for as long as they do!!!!?
