Will they go ahead even? Who knows? But for anyone interested the RT for next week is as big as the Xmas edition and has full sports schedules and the TV/online coverage. I found it all but impossible to follow and could find hardly any reference to the sports I enjoy, like dressage, but no doubt it merits close study. It seems that nearly of all BBC1 will be the Olympics except for the odd established show, and also some of BBC2. Because of the difficult time difference, I suspect I may be following anything I enjoy on the iPlayer.

Technically the games have already started, with softball and football matches starting today - GB women beat Chile 2-0, Sweden beat US 3-0, and NZ v Australia playing now. The first actual event was Japan v Australia softball, where Japan won 8-1...fewer people watching it at the venue than will watch a children's game in an Osaka park on a Sunday morning.

Just watched the Opening Ceremony. Dearie me, that was awful. Worst I've seen I think.

It was deliberately low key Miranda which was a shame as I am sure the Japanese could have put on something stunning.
But doubtless they would have been condemned if they had, so they played it safe.
Watching the gymnastics at the moment. I love the earlier coverage when you see a mix of sports. The track and field events do not hold my attention.
The cycling was excellent.

I didn't mind it being low key. It was too po-faced and dull. Low key doesn't have to be boring

I saw Jill Biden was there as part of the American delegation. Who have we sent in ours? Anyone know?

No idea. Our team is under the strictest regulations outside the arenas so maybe there's no one.
I'm impressed they are showing the gymnastics qualification. We don't usually see this

I saw Jill Biden was there as part of the American delegation. Who have we sent in ours? Anyone know? it used to be Princess Anne who turned up regularly at the Olympics, she was on various committees for years, very involved in her usual hardworking way - is she still? She has recorded a special message for the GB team, maybe it wasn’t considered wise for her to travel to Japan?

That's a really sad ending to Uchimura's career. Such a great gymnast and it ends like that.

Yes - you feel so sorry for those who go out in the very early stages.

I'm watching on iPlayer and I wish they would just stream one sport at at a time. Why cut the gymnastics short to show the end of the cycling? If you can stream it then do it right.

I saw an article in the ST just now and there have been many complaints over the coverage (or lack thereof?). Dan Walker has explained that under the deal with Discovery which provides wall to wall coverage on its own platforms, the BBC can only air two live sports at a time. I would also imagine if one of those sports is deemed to be a minority sport by those in charge and there is something deemed more exciting, then the minority sport will be ditched PDQ, I don’t know if that means you could be sure of watching a complete competition, say diving, if you waited and watched it on iPlayer.

Watched some of the skate boarding before I went to bed. Would you call that a sport? I suppose it's only fair, since they have it in the Winter Olympics.
