The Larkins will premiere on ITV on Sunday October 10th at 8pm.
The Larkins is set in the late 1950s and tells the story of a working-class family led by the golden-hearted wheeler dealer Pop Larkin and his wife Ma, together with their six children, including the beautiful Mariette.
Fiercely loyal to each other and their community, each Larkin family member has a strong work ethic, alongside a disinterest in authority. From government officials and snobbish second homeowners to aggressive urban developers, the Larkins often deal with threats to their idyllic way of life – but they never take things lying down.
The six episode comedy drama, which is based on H.E. Bates’ novel The Darling Buds Of May, stars Bradley Walsh, Joanna Scanlan, Sabrina Bartlett, Tok Stephen, Lydia Page, Liam Middleton, Lola Shepelev, Davina Coleman, Rosie Coleman, Peter Davison, Kriss Dosanjh, Amelia Bullmore, Seeta Indrani, Robert Bathurst, Stephen Hagan, Francesca Waterworth, Barney Walsh, Tony Gardner and Selina Griffiths.

I didn’t like the series with David Jason etc years ago, actually more like decades I suppose but I’ll try this to see what Bradley makes of the role

I loved the David Jason series and have been looking forward to this version.

I think I’ll shall try it. I didn’t fancy it but Bradley Walsh and Joanna Scanlon sound like good casting to me.

Very disappointed with this. I was not a particular fan of the David Jason version but this seemed to miss the mark.
Pop casually handing over £250 - in 1958?!?
Peter Davison's vicar using the word "bloody" - very much a swear word at the time - and making rude gestures. Really?
But my biggest problem was Mariette who seemed to go through the entire programme with a sneer on her face.
Good cast who are doing their best but somehow no amount of maypoles and Morris Men can make up for the overall flatness in the drama.
(Oh, and Mariette hitting the fairground bloke across the back of the head with a piece of wood? Nope.)

Not sure. I remember we weren't keen on The Darling Buds of May and didn't watch many episodes but I thought I would try again as it might provide a bit of welcome light relief and remind me of the farm in Kent where my dad grew up and which I used to visit as a child in the 1950s. It also has a cracking cast but I can't honestly say it engaged me much. It all seemed a bit two-dimensional somehow.

I don’t think I watched much of the original at the time, so can’t really compare. I did enjoy it! Am I the only one? Sunday evening sunshine entertainment. But I do agree with Bidie, I was surprised the vicar used those words and that gesture. I was struggling to think how much £250 bought back then (not being born at that point). There was a lot on Twitter about Ma putting a leg of lamb in the oven and bringing out a roast chicken, but I missed that . (There was a lot of other stuff on Twitter that I won’t repeat).

That's a pretty neat trick!

Opinion seems pretty much split. Some newspaper reviewers are applauding - but I suspect at least one of them condemned the new All Creatures before broadcast and had to eat their words. So they are erring the other way this time.
It will be interesting to see how the viewing figures start - and how they continue.

It turned into a goose. I thought when Pop offered the Brigadier some goose that it hadn't looked like a goose when it went into the oven. It looked like leg of pork to me but I guess it could have been lamb. Take your pick but it wasn't a bird of any sort!

Continuity is just one of the problems in this new series.

I enjoyed The Darling Buds of May (30 years ago? - good grief!). The characters in it were pretty unlikely but had some depth and I remember really caring what happened to them. Catherine Zeta-Jones as Mariette was stunning I thought, and it was entirely believable that the tax man would be smitten by her.
This new production however, although light and a bit of fun, is too exaggerated on detail and too trivial on relationships. I'm finding the characters superficial and difficult to care about. I suppose I'll keep watching for some Sunday night amusement, but not with great enthusiasm.

It was a gammon which changed into a goose, I think.
I didn’t like it much. There was just something about it which felt wrong somehow. It was quite stylised I thought. I think I’ll abandon ship, I’ve got too much of a backlog to spend time on this.

I think I’ll abandon ship, I’ve got too much of a backlog to spend time on this. I think you've put your finger on what was wrong. It was almost a cartoon representation, like animated drawings from a children's book. The more I think about it the more sure I am that I won't watch any more of it.
