I completely forgot it was on! And I found the first one of this story quite tedious so not sure I'll bother. IIRC I enjoyed the book so the makers of this have definitely lost whatever it was that made the book enjoyable.

Yes he could be dull but friendly or meticulous but quirky. He just looks thoroughly fed up doing his job.

I survived about 25 minutes before dozing off tonight. Although I watched the last half on +1 I still didn’t quite get some of what happened And tbh, I don’t really care. Maybe I’ll read the book… So what do we deduce from the final scene, will the dreadful DC be allowed to get away with his behaviour, or will something finally be done?

I think he will be 'moved on'. He knew he was in the wrong.

Yes I hope so too. That was the end of the series. It was beautifully shot, great locations, and I have enjoyed the PD James books that I have read, but this series was so slow!

I’m not expecting there to be another series, this one didn’t really work

I enjoyed it, particularly the last case.

I thought the last case was the best, but I found Bertie Carvel quite boring. I didn't watch the Martin Shaw series, so for me Roy Marsden remains the definitive and superior Adam Dalgliesh.

I quite liked the melancholy atmosphere that hung over the series. The somber music added to that. And in the end, it seemed he was finally ready to at least start to move on.
I do have a question for readers of the books: Dalgleish is apparently quite wealthy, judging by his car and home. Where does his money come from?

He ends up as a Commander in the Met, which would be highly paid, and he has no dependents as they died years ago, so lives alone, in the books. Maybe some family money? Plus the millions he earns from his poetry of course, 😂.
I enjoyed the series, despite quite a battle with My5 which kept showing me the wrong episode 😡, except for the ghastly sergeant. He was like some random blow-in from The Sweeney. I’m sure PD James would never have written him so coarsely, even if he was a chauvinist.

The new series starts on Ch 5 on Thursday. There is a new DS played by Alistair Brammer. He was Chris in the latest production of Miss Saigon. Great singer!

He's the son of a vicar and inherited his windmill home from an aunt called Jane Daligliesh who presumably never married. He lives in Queenhithe, near St Paul's cathedral – no idea if that was a prosperous area at the time the books are are set.
He's a very unlikely character to be successful detective, really – none of the clubbable personality to get on and engagement with politics that would be required at a very senior level, or at least not discussed in the books as far as I remember. Similar in a way to Inspector Morse, who for that reason does not advance very far up the greasy pole.
Is the sergeant you mention Massingham? He's in the early books, I think, and is an earthy, arrogant type who frequently crosses swords with Dalgliesh (and never wins, of course!). He's replaced by Kate Miskin in later books.
Is this incarnation of Dalgliesh worth a look? I loved Roy Marsden in the role, but really didn't like Martin Shaw at all, perhaps because I was always comparing them.

IMO no. Carvel is a very boring actor. And I know the first series had him grieving his wife but he was so shut down it was tedious to watch. A better actor could have brought out the subtleties of the character but Carvel isn't good enough.
ETA: I just googled him and he's won Tony awards so he's obviously much better at stage acting where you have to project. Film and TV is much more subtle and he pulled back too far.

I won't bother then. He was in Dr Foster which I didn't like, but not because of him, I just found the whole thing preposterous (but it was very popular so that shows how much I know!).
