Well I watched episode 1 this afternoon, having read all the fanfare and criticism. I rather liked the controversial Christmas Carol from a couple of years back but am not sure about this. They certainly changed a lot, and swore with some gusto. Sadly they also followed the Jamaica Inn approach to lighting for some scenes, and the unintelligible chap from that is here playing Magwich. Needless to say I thought he was awful and could barely see anything on the prison ship. Olivia Colman was Ok and young Pip and Estella also. Mrs Joe wasn’t as vile as in the book (although ghastly) and she and Joe did manage some civility. Maybe they think the marriage in the book is too unpleasant for modern eyes. Matt Berry is in it, and was his usual audible self. Apparently his Mr Pumblechook will be seen enjoying a little light caning from Mrs Joe!!!!!
I shall carry on with it, but not really impressed. I am hoping that if they are changing so much they will use the original ending.

I didn't bother i'm afraid. I don't really understand the obsession film and TV makers seem to have with this novel when there are so many other Dickens novels, and of course others, that could be adapted. I did watch the repeat of The Secret Live of Books episode about Great Expectations which was presented by Tony Jordan, who wrote the fabulous Dickensian that must surely be due a repeat.

Yeah, I'm another fed up with this novel being constantly adapted. Not going to bother with it.

Watched the first episode tonight. I agree with the “Jamaica Inn levels of lighting” comment. I had subtitles on throughout, so could understand what was said. Olivia Colman is wonderfully evil and worth watching for that alone. I realise there’s so much of the story I couldn’t remember so I have no idea what is changed from the novel. I think I will carry on watching unless the lighting levels become lower than those of Jamaica Inn!

I agree Helen. I thought “not again” when it was announced. They could show a repeat and make something new! And I don’t mean another Christmas Carol!

I haven't bothered. I'm not a great Dickens fan, buy why this again. I don't care if they've modernised it a bit. There are other books, tons of them. Plenty of classics that never get a peep.
Why not take a leap and do another Ivanhoe, or Kidnapped. There are several Hardy books that have never seen a TV adaptation. Trollope, Gaskell, Chaucer, they haven't even done all the Bronte's and there aren't that many.
Even a Georgette Heyer season would be quite nice, her historical accuracy is second to none. Jean Plaidy wrote historical books that aren't all about the six wives. Sutcliffe's books would adapt very well.
I'd love it if they did the Shardlake books. They are filming Cornwell's King Arthur series in Wales as we speak and he does give it a twist.
So much more out there than Dickens over and over again.
On 14th April Netflix have a final film version of The Last Kingdom series, which I'm looking forward to.

Finally got round to watching this. Interesting adaptation. Matt Berry stole episode 1 for me. The OC came second. But oh so s-l-o-w. This could have been a 3 or 4-parter.
I've got a speed control on my PVR. I'll watch part 2 at 1.3 speed.

Matt Berry was the best and also very clear in his speech, like Toast of London of course.

I can't watch him in anything without feeling he's sending it up.

This version was completely slaughtered by the ST critic today. Unsurprisingly!
