Right, I’m calling it now. He’s obviously going to change the ending and I’ve lost hope that he will just reinstate the original, so I reckon Pip will come out as gay. Possibly in a couple with Herbert. Or Estella will.

I think people looking at it as Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations are generally around 1-2 stars. Those taking it as a new work by Stephen Knight are much more favourable, I even saw four stars somewhere! I would imagine the audience will fall away as it progresses but I doubt there will be much more of a shock factor after episode 2. There can’t be surely?😂 That's interesting and I can see that. So far I only know of one chum who has said that they like it. Others gave it a go and then switched over to something else. Quite like the comment by one critic who decided to play 'issues' or 'woke' bingo. So far most of the categories have come up with only radical female emancipation yet to occur.

Episode 3 veers even further from the story. Mr Jaggers wasn’t a totally evil crook was he? I do like the actor playing him though, a rapper apparently. Didn’t Pip know Mr Drummle? Whereas here he is Jaggers’ partner/dupe in an illegal insurance scam. Multiple F Bombs of course. And my theory may have been shot down as Pip said he repelled the sexual advances of a ship’s captain. I thought the episode was rather plodding. We also had a scene in Australia between Magwitch and Compeyson but it was very dark and I couldn’t understand what happened.

Episode 4. Lurching from bad to worse. More F bombs of course, and Jaggers and Pip disposing of a body in the Thames. Right. Oh and then they popped to an opium den! Such larks, Pip, such larks!

So in episode 5... Pip is constantly high on opium so has to go cold turkey at Mr Wemmick's. Estella self harms but fortunate!y Magwitch has found her and takes the knife from her and tells her he is her father. Jaggers meanwhile beats up Compeyson!
They did one scene very well when Joe visits Pip and is insulted by the little snob. And they do seem to be explaining the Magwitch/Compeyson story more prominently than in the book. Luckily there's only one more to whizz through.

Well that’s over, thank God. I mainly watched to see how things deviated from the original and indeed they did. So in episode 6, well it’s too complicated to waste time typing but… Pip attempts suicide, Mrs Joe doesn’t get murdered so she and Joe are still married, Magwitch meets Miss H again and insists she drops the wedding dress malarkey, which she does! Because this is the day “everything changes” as he kept on and on saying. And I thought where on earth have I been hearing this lately, and of course it’s for the EastEnders flash forward for the big Christmas mystery. Anyhoo, Miss H shoots Compeyson and sets fire to Satis House but doesn’t die. Pip turns down Estella’s offer of a loveless marriage and after a false start marries Biddy (who is now a Chartist). And possibly Estella and Jaggers are an item. After all the darkness (literally) and misery it ends with country dancing on a sunny afternoon.
I read online that as various plot strands aren’t completed (especially stitching up Drummle, whose plot line about slavery seemed to fizzle to nothing) they may have left the door open for series 2! 😱

I'm sure Dickens would be so grateful. 🥴
