Pippy Blinders is just about right. In episode two we have Mr Pumblechook being whipped on his bare buttocks, Miss Havisham and Estella smoking opium, Miss H providing a prostitute for Pip on his 18th birthday, Mr Jaggers blackmailing a judge for being "a sodomite", Miss H giving Pip opium to sell at the docks and Pip refusing an order for chains and manacles as they were to be used in the slave trade! Well I for one dont remember any of that happening!! I shall persevere but dont expect much. I just want to see how he ends it. Will Pip marry Biddy? Shes the only nice one in it and hes changing everything else so why not? 😂

I didn't bother i'm afraid. I don't really understand the obsession film and TV makers seem to have with this novel when there are so many other Dickens novels, and of course others, that could be adapted. I did watch the repeat of The Secret Live of Books episode about Great Expectations which was presented by Tony Jordan, who wrote the fabulous Dickensian that must surely be due a repeat. Dickensian was excellent

I did wonder how many GCSE English Literature students might have produced some startling essays for their examiners It should be available on I-Player, I would love to watch it again Dickensian was one of my all time favourite television series. I thought it was so cleverly put together. However...... my English Literature professor son-in-law was horrified by it as he dreaded to think what ideas it would give to future students! I saw his point but still loved it, was very sorry it was never extended and also wish it could be repeated.

It was repeated once on Drama so you never know, they may show it again.

The Telegraph critic on Monday gave it one star and that was generous. We watched Grace on ITV and will be watching Why Didn't They Ask Evans over the Easter weekend.

I think people looking at it as Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations are generally around 1-2 stars. Those taking it as a new work by Stephen Knight are much more favourable, I even saw four stars somewhere! I would imagine the audience will fall away as it progresses but I doubt there will be much more of a shock factor after episode 2. There can’t be surely?😂
