Did anyone watch.
I wasn't going to but it turned out to be a very intriguing first episode. There's going to be a lot more unveiling in the next two episodes.
I have never been to the Isle of Man but it did make it look very grim. Perhaps it was because it was filmed in the winter but it worked.

I'm recording it so I can binge-watch later. 🙂

It was filmed in various locations in Ireland, one of them being a short drive from where my daughter lives and actually a very beautiful spot on the shores of Dublin Bay. It looked so gloomy that I didn't recognise it which was a disappointment! I guess that Ireland's tax breaks for film makers made it cheaper than shooting it in the actual Isle of Man. I did enjoy the story though. I thought the way the dialogue between two sisters with a bit of a snippy relationship was beautifully written and acted. I haven't come across Eve Best before. Looking forward to the rest of it.

I thought it was a great start. I did have trouble imagining how this woman could be constantly zipping off to the IOM without anyone noticing, because Becca seemed to suggest she didn’t go anywhere much at all. But never mind that, it was a good episode and a great cast.
I saw Eve Best some years ago as The Duchess of Malfi at the Old Vic. It was a stunning production and she was really good.

I binge watched it. It was so good, I couldn’t stop watching. I’ve been to the Isle of Man a few times and was looking for something I recognised. No wonder I didn’t see owt. Extremely well-written and beautifully acted. I hope this wins some awards.

I've binged it too, and thought it was well acted. There are things that I found hard to believe could happen in real life, but overall a good production.

Was that the candle-lit production?

No, iirc that is done at the Wanamaker Theatre at the Globe. This was, however, extremely well lit and atmospheric.

Someone mentioned somewhere, don’t think one here, something about an adoption??
I didn’t watch episode 1 so maybe it was talked about in there? Who was adopted by whom??

The mother was adopted and she went to the IOM to reconnect with her birth mother, from whom she inherited the house.

Thanks Marion I didn’t realise it was only 3 episodes, quite a lot of tying up story strands to do tonight

I really enjoyed this. The thing I didn't quite get...had her husband known all along what was going on? I did feel sorry for him, he seemed to be the only family member who was left with unresolved issues at the end. I think the basis of the story would have worked better if Becca and family had been made to live further away from the parents like Roseline. How did she not notice something wasn't quite right with her parents' relationship and that her mother disappeared for long stretches if she did so much for them? That was never explained was it?

No, I also felt this was difficult to understand as Becca was so close. Still, we do know people manage double family lives so perhaps if you just do it, you get away with it! I very much enjoyed this too: it made a nice change of subject.

She said she saw them about every two weeks. She also thought that her mum had lots of trips away to Wales with her friend Maureen who had a caravan there. Her mum would send her photos purporting to be from Wales. Maureen didn't exist, this was her way of getting back to the Isle of Man regularly. I have met my mum's friend Muriel once in about 10 years and that was accidental. They go away together and go out for days etc. You don't automatically think your mum is lying. Mind you if my mum is having an affair with some bloke somewhere I pity him!!!
The father did know about the diagnosis and what she intended to do and where she was. He just didn't want to accept it, but he knew.

Not so close then if she only saw them every two weeks. She gave the impression that she was doing things for and with them all the time and was responsible for their well being. The impression I got of Mary's life on the Isle of Man was that she was there for longer stretches than could be accommodated by two week gaps between seeing her daughter. I feel mean picking holes in the story as I did thoroughly enjoy it - excellent acting of well written dialogue is always a winner for me - but you really did need a huge suspension of disbelief where the basic premise was concerned!
