When George Halas founded the Bears he based the navy blue and orange of the Bears on the traditional color scheme of the University of Illinois Fighting Illini uniforms. Halas played football at Illinois when he was at university. i.pinimg.com/736x/87/b0/a9/87b0a94d7c6e7b1dfe91840e001a713c.jpgCollege football in the US goes back to the late 19th century. Stadiums routinely filled with 100,000 people for games even back then. But when guys graduated there was no place to play after that. That is how the NFL was born. Businesses sponsoring club teams made up of former college stars. To this today the college game is much bigger in some places - particularly the deep south where they have no pro team. Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi. But even up north stadiums like University of Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame pack in 100,000 fans every Saturday.

Two of the best Bears ever. Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers. Butkus was pure NASTY he would NEVER be allowed to play in the modern NFL and Gayle Sayers unfortunately played at a time when they didn't know how to surgically repair knees. Butkus! Obviously I know his reputation but I've never seen him play. I was sat here with my mouth open. In between the winces! Talk about leading with your helmet! "He never took a bath or a shower after a game. He just lay down in front of his locker and licked himself."

"He never took a bath or a shower after a game. He just lay down in front of his locker and licked himself." There is that one scene in slow motion where he grabs a player by the facemask and tries to twist his head off! He literally could have broke the blokes neck but that is how they played back then. Dirty was allowed.

Imagine getting Sayers and Butkus in the same rookie draft. They wound-up being the premier offense and defense players in the NFL during their careers and yet they never made the playoffs and the Bears only had 2 seasons where they won more games than lost. I guess that is why Butkus was so angry. The rest of the team wasn't so good. LOL

Not only did they get them in the same draft, they got them at 3 (Butkus) and 4 (Sayers), the number 3 pick was acquired from the Steelers. While looking this up, I discovered that the Washington Redskins drafted a future hall of famer in the tenth round, at 245.

While looking this up, I discovered that the Washington Redskins drafted a future hall of famer in the tenth round, at 245. Just goes to show you never know with the rookie draft.
Even modern drafts, with all of the scouting and physical, mental and analytical testing they go through, you just never know how they will actually play in the NFL vs. college.
Tom Brady 6th round pick 199 overall in 2000.
Then you have some #1 over picks who were either just meh (Jameis Winston #1 2015) or complete busts (Sam Bradford #1 2010, Jamarcus Russell #1 2007)
Miranda and I were discussing the other day whether or not Mitchell Trubisky may turn out to be a bust at #2.
If I were a GM I would always use the #1 pick to take defensive player, linebacker or pass rusher. And choose quarterback in 2nd or 3rd round.
The microscope is always so highly focused on first round quarterbacks and other skill players like receivers and running back and the urgency for them to be stars.
Lineman, linebackers and other "big fellas" are given much more time to develop by the press and fans.

I like the draft, but I worry about the industry that has developed around them, producing mock drafts every week up to the real thing. How many of them actually look remotely right? They look more like things to keep the likes of Mel Kiper in his job.

They look more like things to keep the likes of Mel Kiper in his job. And his hair! LOL
But you are so correct. Kiper is like a TV weather man. People tune in religiously to hear their predictions but it would be interesting to see someone do an audit of just how many times they got it right vs. how many times they were completely wrong.

At about 5 minutes, Bill Tobin ripped into Kiper.

My reaction - Jim Harbaugh, yeh! But WTF is Trent Dilfer? So I had to look him up! He was the Raven's QB when they had that Year Touched By God. As it's known in my house!

I love it!
"Kiper is as qualified as my neighbor to assess NFL draft picks. And my neighbor is a postman..."
I love Kiper saying how daft the Colts were for not drafting Trent Dilfer with the #1 pick in that draft and that they were stupid for thinking they would be fine with veteran Jim Harbaugh...um, Trent Dilfer turned out to be a total bust who only many years later lucked out to find his way on the Ravens super bowl team.
Meanwhile Jim Harbaugh had a very respectable NFL career, went on to be a very successful college and NFL head coach.
Well done Mel!

I also love the look on Joe Theisman's face when Mel is spewing all his BS. Joe is like "Well I played quarterback for many years in the NFL and I might still be playing if my leg didn't get bent into a pretzel by Lawrence Taylor, so whattya mean Jim Harbaugh is no good? Maybe we have been watching two different guys play."
