He did fall in love with a woman who was already married. Or chose someone else to marry. I can't remember properly.
But TBH, in the books he did have his adventures. He wasn't as celibate as John Thaw played him. And as you know, quite often the woman he falls in love with is the murderer.

I've just watched this. I took it that Claudine was going off to photograph the Vietnam War. Nicely played awkwardness between Morse and Joan, I thought. I agree, though, that the tone of the story was more Foyle's War than Endeavour, emphasised by Ellie Haddington in a similar role.
It does look as if Thursday is going to retire and bow out at the end of this series. If it's a choice between that and falling foul of Eddie Nero and Cromwell Ames, I hope he does retire though I will miss him. If Cowley Station closes and Bright goes too then I wonder if they will make any more - it won't be the same without them.
I didn't spot the CD cameo this week.

For some reason I thought last week’s was the last in the series so it was a nice surprise to find I was wrong, I thought CTM was finished too.

Surely not! Retirement would be bad enough.

An excellent episode, though in terms of the trademark bittersweet endings of the 'Morseverse', the emphasis was definitely on the bitter. {SPOILER:Click to Show} Poor Fancy - although when Morse said that what they really meant was thank goodness it wasn't them, what we were thinking was "Thank goodness it wasn't Thursday!" With Thursday staying on there's room for him to remain in the show, but Morse has to team up with McNutt at some point. Next spin-off: Truelove of the Yard? I think the best line (and worst pun) has to go to Max's comment about going through the motions.

That was one of the best episodes this series. I had the bearded teacher down as the killer but was completely wrong! As usual!

He did have a rather suspicious beard! I thought it would be one of the boys.
Very reminiscent of Unman, Wittering and Zigo in the way he took the class register and the awfulness of the boys.
I'm glad it turned out as it did, with Thursday unable to retire and the casualty, sad as it was, someone we hadn't invested in too much as he hadn't been around long enough.
It looks as if Bright will not be there if and when there is another series. I'll be very sorry to see him go. I'd guess that Thursday and Morse will no longer be colleagues but he'll be there to offer a friendly ear and some advice.
Excellent stuff.

That was one of the best episodes this series. I had the bearded teacher down as the killer but was completely wrong! As usual! So did I! And I thought he was the Chemistry teacher so was making the drugs in his spare time and the Marrakesh connection was a lie. I mean they talked to his wife and she never said Ivory was horrible or a bad husband or travelled a lot to North Africa, did she? So that was a poor bit of undercover work, lol. I was very worried that boy was going to shoot Thursday, in fact every time the guns came out I panicked. Rather a poignant end I thought.

It looks as if Bright will not be there if and when there is another series. I'll be very sorry to see him go. Me too. At the start it looked like he was just going to be the stereotypical , procedure-bound superior officer who obstructs the hero, but he turned out to be much more than that, and in his own quiet way a bit of a hero himself. I thought the scene where Morse visited him was a bit odd - for a moment it seemed like {SPOILER:Click to Show} it would be revealed that for some bizarre reason Bright had arranged Fancy's death. Glad I was wrong. Incidentally, a couple of weeks ago Radio 4 Extra repeated their 2007 adaptation of Lindsey Davis's The Iron Hand of Mars - it was funny having Anton Lesser as Bright and as a 30-odd year old Roman detective running simultaneously!

I thought that homage was there too. What's the betting Thursday is posted where Morse is next series! I hope they are now too much of a draw to break up. Clever though that it became clear he wasn't going to be a victim of the gangs - but then there was the possibility he might get it in the back from the boy in the clocktower. Wonder if we'll see Morse undercover again? It was a good wheeze. How about menswear assistant in Oxford's family-owned department store: "Are you free Mr Morse?"

I've never heard of Unman, Wittering and Zigo. Funnily enough either the RT or The Observer commented (favourably) on references to 1970s films and I was wondering why I hadn't noticed any!
